crazy temp on corners!

bought a 92 efini model a few weeks ago and have been keeping an eye on the coolant temp gauge as i have heard all the overheating stories.a few days after i got it i glanced at the gauge and the needle was at the top!i checked my coolant and topped it up slightly and tried it again but i noticed when it gets to normal temp(about half way) and i turn a right hand corner the needle goes up real fast and then when i straighten out it goes back to normal! i thoght it may have been a wire shorting on steering column or something but cant find any obvious answer.has anyone experienced this before?

First off are you sure the coolant system is completely full or air free ? ? ? ? The sending unit for the temp gauge is on the drivers left near the oil filter/just below it. If the system isn't full when you turn right the coolant may be moving over to the sending unit. This is speculation as i can't imagine it not having enough coolant in and not setting off thelow level buzzer. This is interesting. Jack
PS. the gauge moving past the half way pont and reaching the top of the gauge is not a good thing.

Doesn't sound like an actual cooling-system problem. Sounds like a bad connection (ground or hot) or a short in the wiring. If you were low enuff on coolant to expose the sensor to air, your engine would be fried and the low-coolant sensor would have been on for a while.

The resistance of the sensor goes down as the temp goes up. This indicates that you are getting at least a partial short to ground between the sensor and the gauge when you turn right.

it definately isnt overheating and even if the temp reading was correct there is know way it would cool down in about 1 second back to normal.it actually goes of the clock if i keep turning! i heard from somebody about some sort of resistor in gauges to stop them flickering around when turning so it could be that.im off to take the dash out again and have a good look over wiring now, will let you know how i get on

no luck im afraid.had the instruments out and checked them over and cleaned all wiring connections.put it back together and took it for a spin but its still doing it!just wondering whether i should try and find new instrument panel or can you get the gauges on there own?

I would just buy an aftermarket temp gauge and check your temps. If everything is fine, don't worry about the stock gauge.

They are all decent, just pick the one you think looks the best to you. I used a cheap Autometer temp gauge for a few years which worked great. However, I track my car so it got switched out for a Greddy gauge which has Peak Hold/Warning indicator.
