Unhappy crap.....that can't be good

When my 7 reaches about 4500 rpm it's starts to smoke. I took it up to 5000 the other day and the massive cloud of smoke came out my exhaust pipe. It was literally a smoke screen. I didn't last that long since I let of the gas when I seen smoke in my rear view mirror but it was alot. This can't be good. Any ideas?....
Thanks to all who respond.

Could be the oil seal on the secondary turbo.

It would lead me to think it's oil and turbo related mainly because it's 4500 that that the secondary turbo comes online...

See if it smells like burnt oil...oh yeah, you are going wot at 4500rpm ... hmmmm, strap a buddy down on your spoiler while you are going wot and ask him to smell the exhaust and see if it smells like burnt oil...If you don't know what burnt oil smells like, just go up to any Camaros with gray primer all over them and smell around the engine bay.

I had the same problem. Does it smoke on a cold start till it warms up? Mine started like yours then the problem started to happen at startup as well. My engine is pulled and disassembled right know ($) The problem was caused by a broken oil control ring O-ring (outer one). The O-ring was brittle and wavey and a half inch piece had broken off but was still inplace in the control ring. Now I would agree that it could be your turbos. But be open minded about the source of the problem. (I thought that it was my turbos when it first started too). Let us know when you discover the cause.

well the guy I bought the car from said he rebuilt the turbos about a year ago. (Didn't think to ask him why.... I know, I know) But the smoke will appear even if I rev the car up to 4500-5000 at a stand still. But it has to be held there for a couple seconds. It doesn't really smoke on the start up. Actually the car doesn't smoke at all except for the times I'm talking about. I don't know what the smoke smells like since I'm inside the car when it happens. I suppose I could get my brother to get in while I take a big wiff. I'm probably going to go to R&R rotary today and talk with Steve down there (for those who live in So.Cal know who I'm talking about) that's if I can get the time to and he's not too busy... I'll keep you guys posted though. Thanks for you help.

It's your secondary turbo, the seals are shot. Or maybe the compressor is loose from the turbine shaft slightly, allowing the tubine to push the compressor wheel off the oil seal slightly (this happened to me once). Started to wear out the compressor housing slightly (Secondary turbo was really whistlening too)

If it is doing that w/o any load on the engine (ie reving in neutral) then it is most likley an Oil control seal going bad - the second turbo won't come on line w/o a load on the motor.

it is doing it at idle... I have to hold it at 4500 or so for a few seconds and then poof! This massive cloud of smoke pours out. It looks white to me maybe with a slight tint of blue in it. It doesn't really have that strong of a smell either but I am suffering with allergies right now

Doesn't white smok = fuel? Like his secondary injectors are dumping in?

No, white smoke means oil. Dark black smoke means fuel.

Okay guys... I just got back from R&R rotary and talked with Steve... Say bye bye to my engine. It's a gonner. The oil control rings are history. So it looks like the money I had set aside to do my cooling system is now going toward the rebuild. Which brings me to my next question. Is $2,700-$3,000 a good price for a rebuild? I think it sounds fair. I'm actually happy or should I say excited about the rebuild. Me car seemed to run strong and fast except for the smoking thing. If my car ran that good with a crappy engine I can't imagine it with a fresh one.

Please tell me that price is for the engine only, NOT for the labor too, right?

If so, that's in line with other prices I've seen.

No, that includes labor. It's actually a little high just in case they come across something else.
