Coolingmist/Shurflo pump?

Hey,

I've just finshed installing my DIY water injection project. Well, it's not completed yet as I'm testing the system out right now. My question is, when I test my WI with the nozzel attach to my winsheild, the pump seems to surge. I thought that the pump presure/flow is surpose to be constant? Is normal for it to surge like that. The spray pattern is good but the spray cone goes from large to medium. Any help with be great.

Jay

Please post a pic of your spray pattern if you have it.

get an accumulator tank...~$30. and the pump won't need to run everytime the injection sys in on.

So, is it normal for the pump to surge from a strong flow to medium flow?

Mine doesn't. When the pump is on the spray cone doesn't change at all.

Is there a presure adjustment to the pump? I'm using the same pump as the Coolingmist system. The system is getting a full 12V but the cone changes pattern. If I do use an accumulator will the presure stay constant?

I don't know the answer to the accumulator question. The Shur flow pump I bought from Northern Tool. It's an "on demand" pump and the pressure appears to stay constant when the system is on. The only thing I bought from Cooling Mist was the adjustable pressure switch. The nozzle I bought from Mcmaster Carr.

yes, that's the best way to use a shurflow pump...the accumulator tank with hold whatever psi the pump is rated too...all the way up to the solenoid.

when you trigger the solenoid, you will begin to bleed off a pressurized tank, instantly...no lag in pump performance. This will also extend the life of your pump because the pump will only run for a couple secs every so often. The pump is equipped with a pressure switch and it will cut off once the tank is charged.

something does seem odd with your pump though. Return the pump for a new one and get a tank.

The surging is caused by the pump pressure switch cycling from back pressure. When the system is closed off, the pump switch should shut off the pump. If there is pressure loss then the pump will come on again until the back pressure builds up enough to shut it off. Most likely you have a slight leak or the pump pressure switch is defective or possibly even a slight clog somewhere.

Make sure you have clean liquid with no particulate matter going into your reservoir and also coming out of your reservoir. Filters will help. Flush the lines after the pump with the nozzle off. Check for any obstructions in the nozzle but do not dig it out with anything that will damage the orifice. Blow though it or compressed air.

My set up is consist of Shurflo 8000 pump from northern tool, water nozzel from McMasterCarr 6.36 gph?, and a presure switch from Coolingmist. I set my WI to come on at 8-9psi.
Did you guys have to adjust the pump (presure switch) allen screw on top of the pump? Or was yours ready to go out of the box. My surge problem went away when I adjusted the allen screw clockwise almost all the way in.

The flow is nice and even with the screw set almost all the way in. No more surging or uneven cone shape/flow.

I have no way of know how much presure I'm pumping out since I do not have a presure gauge.

Any input would be great.

Jay
