Cooling For The Turbos ?

Hey Guys,

Ok, I'm trying to figure out the cooling system for the FD for both the turbos and the engine. Now I know that the oil jets don't work at idle, they only come on when the car is moving, but when the car is at idle and the engine is on, I know the water pump is running, but is the oil pump circulating oil through the system when the car is at idle?

Also, for the stock twin turbo setup, is oil and water both being circulated through the turbos as well as the engine when sitting at idle? Or do the turbos only get the water and oil circulated through them when you're on the gas and the turbos are spoolin?

If you guys have any info, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks.

Oil and water pumps are both driven from the e-shaft. If the engine is turning over, so are the pumps.

Uh....what makes you think this, that the oil jets don't "come on" at idle"? I am assuming by 'Oil Jets" you are talking about the OMP that injects oil onto the rotors?

The water and oil cool and lubricate the turbos. It is not a 'demand' system, if that is what you are asking, but rather a constant circulation. This is why you should always idle your car for at least 30 seconds to a couple of minutes after a hard run, so that the turbos can give up their heat thru the cooling and oil systems, otherwise you can get what is called 'coking' wherein the turbos can literally cook the oil on the shaft bearings.

If you guys have any info, it'd be much appreciated. Thanks.
There is a pretty good cooling system flow-chart running around somewhere on the Forum....I wll see if I can find it.

It's in the FAQ links under "Cooling System Info"

If you're talking about the oil jets in the Eshaft, they are controlled by a thermal valve that's inside the bolt in the shaft nose. You can modify it and have the jets on all the time.
They are turned on/off to help with heating up the engine.
