Cooling Fans Not Staying On

Hey Guys,

I just got my second FD after 15 years. This one is a 94 touring with 74k miles on it. I noticed that if the fans are on when I turn off the car the fans turn off but if I turn the key to ACC they will stay on only if the key is on. Aren’t they supposed to stay on with the key off until the temps go down? I hate to sit here with the key turned until the fans go off.

Thanks
Tara

My car doesn't keep the fans on after shut off, either. I think '93 and some '94 cars had a recall that added a second controller to keep the fans on after the engine is off. Maybe your car never got that.

Congrats on the new FD!

Your fans should stop with with the ignition turned off. There’s nothing really to gain by leaving them running with the engine stopped and no coolant circulating. You won’t see coolant temps dropping any faster.
Back in the day there was something called “the fan mod” which might be confusing you. It caused the fans to run for 10 minutes after the engine was turned off to (in theory) circulate air under the hood and help with heat soaking plastics and rubber. Fortunately it was easily reversed because many, including me, found it either ineffective or counter productive. I just open the hood when I can.

Welcome back to FD life!

Mazda did a fan recall back in the 90's that did some of the things you are talking about. It was a band-aid on the problem. I have a big post on fan control, this should clear a lot of it up -

As mentioned I would always crack my hood to safety catch level after any longer drive or hot weather after parking.Never any problems with rats nest hoses even after 27 years. This is probably a good idea on any turbo car you may own.

Thanks for the info guys! Thankfully the previous owner had the engine harness and rats nest replaced by Mazda less than a year ago so all those components are fresh rubber and plastic. I plan on getting a ceramic coated DP soon and I have the FC thermoswitch to install. Whenever I get home I’ll open the hood for a while. If I can’t after a hard drive I’ve been putting the AC on for a few minutes before I stop driving if it’s not already on. I’m just kind of paranoid until I can get the DP and PowerFC along with the FC thermoswitch.

Nothing to be worried about.
The FC thermoswitch, running as much (distilled) water to coolant as you can safely get away with, a quality all-metal radiator, good hoses, and if you don’t have them already and you’re ambitious dual oil coolers... and a near stock FD engine should be happy. And if you’re getting a PFC, I think you can adjust fan threshold with it instead of the S5 FC switch.
Wrapping or heat-coating the DP is great, but just for under hood temps.
