Can someone identify this coolant sensor? A part # would be great, I can't find it in any of my manuls and I thought I had about everything in print. Thanks for the help.

That's the coolant level sensor. Just ask for the coolant level sensor on the t-stat housing.

Are you sure? I thought that was the black one at the bottom of the housing.

That actually looks like it might be an aftermarket sensor that somebody tapped into the housing.

Do you have an aftermarket water temp gauge?

I have an aftermarket water temp gauge I put on a couple of days ago. The plug end that goes to this sensor appeared to be factory....until it broke into a million pieces.

Did the sensor come with the gauge? Did you put the sensor into the housing? Or was the sensor already there when you bought the car, and you just hooked your new water temp gauge to it?

[Added on edit:]
Actually, I think what you are saying is that the sensor was there when you bought the car, and you hooked your new water temp gauge to it thinking it was a stock factory "extra" sensor... am I right?

If so, don't sweat it. Just replace it with the sensor that I'm sure you got with your water temp gauge. Different gauges are calibrated for different sensors anyway, so using one that was left there by someone else is very dubious.

I put in a new sensor for the aftermarket gauge. The sensor in question is stock and has a stock plug that connects to it that is busted. This sensor has nothing to do with my aftermarket gauge or sending unit.

I hate to burst your bubble, but that is not a factory sensor. Well it might be a Mazda sensor, but Mazda didn't put it there. Here is what Mazda puts in these cars:

Obviously, the black one is the coolant level sensor. There is a thermosensor on the back of the water pump, just below the black plastic pressure tank. There is also a thermoswitch on the back of the water pump just below the thermosensor.

So, my guess is that somebody added that sensor for an aftermarket gauge at some point. You can buy electrical connectors that look similar to factory ones, so if this is your only reason for thinking that this is a stock setup, I would ask that you look ant any other FD as see that it does have a sensor in that location. Besides, an engineer would never place a coolant temp sensor above the coolant level sensor. I would suggest you start tracing some wires and figure out exactly where that wire goes. I highly doubt it ties into the factory wiring harness.

Good luck.

Jeff
