Coolant Leak

Yesterday when I started my 1993 RX-7 there was a constant beep on the dashboard telling me that I need to add more coolant. I immediately turned the car off.

I checked the dip stick of the coolant resorvoir and it was bone dry.

I added more coolant and it went straight through. I could hear it dripping all over my garage.

I've tried to look where the problem could be but it is so difficult to see anything there.

Can someone please assist me here.

Thank You Kindly.

You need to check the coolant level there. The low coolant sensor (buzzer) is in the t-stat housing.

Best thing to do is put the car on jackstands, remove the undertray, clean everything up, add more coolant and get under the car with a flashlight and track down the leak. I've also heard of dyes that can be added to the oil, that show up in black light, that can be helpful in finding oil leaks. Maybe there is one for coolant, or the same one will work.

Thank You for your response. That is not where I was checking.

I'm hoping that you have solved my problem.

Is this the proper way to add Coolant?

Mahjik,

Please tell me if this is correct.

Please see the attached image of my 93 RX-7 engine.

Do I open the circled **** and add coolant in there?

Mahjik,

Thanks again for your answer.

Yesterday I added coolant directly to the Coolant Resorvoir. I guess I was not supposed to do that?

So, just to confirm with you one more time so that I dont get it wrong.

I open the Red Circled Cooling System Cap in my attahced image.

Add Coolant and then check the Coolant Resorvoir?

Also, why are there 2 cooling system caps in the engine?

You heard water falling on the floor because you overfilled the coolant reservoir. The cap you circled is the correct one to check. This cap doesnt have a spring. Like Mahjik said, the coolant level sensor is located there. The second cap by the battery is the air separator tank (AST). This cap does have a spring. This tank is supposed to remove air thats trapped in your cooling system.

Adding coolant to the engine through the cap you circled wont raise the coolant level in the reservoir tank.

Think of it as an overflow tank. The level in that tank is not important. (Unless it's too full, then it will spill out the relief hole and make a mess).

You need to add at the cap in that picture. If it's all the way full when the engine is cold, you have enough coolant.

Be absolutely sure no animals or pets get into the spilled coolant. They think it smells good and yummy, and they die a rapid and painful death from just a little bit.

Dave,

When you say "cap" you are referring to the cap that I have circled in my attached image. Is that correct?

Thank You.

I know, I realized that I am repeating myself. Just want to be 100% sure. I'm going to go ahead and fill it at the red circled cap.

Thanks to all that helped. The problem is solved. It was so incredibly easy. I thought I'd have to add a lot of coolant but apparently not. It only needed a little bit.

There was minor smoke when I added it but after a few minutes that dissapated.

I appreciate all those that assisted me here.

Great people on this site.
