Cool FD Installs

OK, for all of you guys that have come up with cool stuff to install anything on your FD, here's the chance to show it. I saw Dr Wankel's PFC holder and someone who did a KILLER job repainting the interior panels dark silver. Anything stereo wise, electronic wise, or generally anything cool you think we'd like to see, post it!

Let 'em roll...

Dash mod

I just got this car, but here is what I did first. I removed all the dash and door trims, stripped them down, and painted them with flexible red paint.

I like the interior. I would like to do something like that with mine. If you don't mind I would love some how to's and some recommended products. Just e-mail me or PM if you get a chance.

I'm going to try to post a pic of how my RX is looking at this stage in it's creation. This is my first attachment so if it doesn't work....sorry. If anyone has any hints or tips to improve the post, please let me know.

The super charger was custom made by some engineers that my mechanic knows. He had done quite a few on the 12A motor. Maybe the downpipe and midpipe are from another company. I thought he ordered the whole system from Racing Beat. I just got started into it a week or so ago. Don't really know what all he has got going. He said he wanted to build a one of a kind.

I got two small ones here.....

I wired in a relay on my turn signals on each corner of the car so that when my turn signals go off, my front and rear side running lights blink alternately from the turn signals. They blink perfectly opposite from the turn signals. It looks pretty cool I think.

Then theres my brake light kill switch. I wired a mometary switch (normally closed) switch to my brake pedal switch. So when i hold the button down my brake lights dont illuminate. This comes in very handy when your the only one speeding and need to slow down with out drawing any attention. Very cool!

Well, thank you JoeD. It's good to know your not an *** like so many people out there. I have never had a car with a turbo or supercharger. I never said I knew anything about them. I'm excited about getting the car and was trying to give an idea of what was being done to it. I guess I won't post again until I am an expert as you obviously are. All I give a **** about is my car looks good, and i have complete faith that the guy rebuilding it will make it run good.

Now THAT'S cool!

I also like the idea of a supercharger, as that I hate lag. Anything is possible if you have the ingenuity (and money) to undertake such a project. I've talked to a guy that made a Vortech supercharger kit for his V-6 MX-3.

Vortech and other supercharger and turbo manufacturers sell units bare, and you would just develope all the other neccesary parts. Vortech even have different dummy units they can lend you (with differnt outlets, etc) so that you can develop your system.

Hi,
I would be glad to help all I can. First you will ned flexible plastic paint. ---I got "SEM Vinyl & plastic Color Spray" it was about $8 a can. you will also need plastic prep for after you sand off all the old paint.
--- The sand paper stuff looks like steal wool or brillow pad. It isn't metal. Hopefully the auto shop will know what it is, I can't remember the name. It is about 6" squares of this Sandless sandpaper.
---The panels already have an old paint on them, you have to remove that. I havn't found any easy way to do that other than sit there and sand it all off. I didn't use sand paper though. That will leave grooves in the plastic and you will see it when you paint it. (I did that on some pieces) this other stuff doen't leave scratches, but it takes a while. It took me about 4 days to finish mine because my fingers were rubbed raw...but I thought it was worth it.
---Choose a panel to start with. I first did the ring around the center speaker. It was small and a practice piece. Pop out that (if you want to start there). There are two of those pop thingies in the front two corners (not toward the front of the car, towards you). then use a flat screw driver and bend back the grille on the back side where it is glued down. The glue will break off easily. Bend them so the wire grille will slide out of that plastic part. ---Sand that piece well! ---Wash it with hot soap and water. --Dry it, ---spray it with the plastic cleaner -- find a room temp place (with a fan if you want) and spray it with thin coats, letting each dry. Paint it until you like how it looks. Let it dry. Put the grille back though its holes, (careful not to scrap the paint off with the sharp corners).
--Next figure out what panels you want to do. The hardest to get to was the dash. It all had to come out! FYI with you un-do all the screws for the dash, it slides towards the steering wheel, NOT UP TOWARDS THE WINDSHIELD!!
Good LUck , if you have any other questions I would be glad to answer them.
Also, don't use power tools, it will stratch your panels up or melt them. (Tried that too)
Later
-Dave

Re: Re: Dash mod

Thanks Node, It took a long time, and I tried to get good paint. I wasn't sure how it would turn out. But I would say I am satisfied. I think red works well because it seems to be a good contrast to the controls (buttons and dials and such) on the dash. not to mention goes well with the car color.

You're in Raleigh? I'll have to come see this supercharged FD, then. Who is this "mechanic" that you're talking about? I'm curious. And JoeD, I'll let you know what I find.

They make superchargers for 12As and NA 13Bs. It would take a near infinite degree of stupidity to develop one for a 13B-REW or any rotary that comes turbo.

When it's done (if it works) I would love to met up with you. Show off each others cars and get to know some one else with an RX-7. The Mechanic is Jerry Strickland. He owns a shop called Clean and Fast. Seems like a really good guy. He used to own a shop called RX-7 Connection in Texas. I beleive it was near Houston, but not sure. He has also been racing 1st and second generation RX-7s for many years.

He doesn't sound like that great of a guy if he's telling you he's putting a supercharger on an FD. Now you're sure you have an FD and not an FC, right? And I actually don't do car-oriented socials.

who the **** would get rid of the entire rats nest, turbo system, intercooler, and customize a new exhaust system to install a supercharger.

dude, i dont think you have a supercharger. i think you still have the stock turbos. or your just confused?

maybe you think you have an FD, but actually an FC?? an FD is from 93-95 in the U.S. an FC: from 86 to 90.

I redid my interior gunmetal gray awhile back, i think the pics are archived somewhere...

FD thats a very cool mod... i wonder..... button to turn off brake lights altogether, but leave the headlights on.... great for a night time get-away

There was one FD that my friend raced a year or so ago who set up his caution lights to go -- bright brake light, normal brake light, ambers...it looked sweet

If this guy Braz is new and maybe not as knowledgeable as some others than why don't some of you guys give a little slack. I think this would make someone not want to come on here and chat anymore. You never know what someone might have to offer.

Braz: if your just learning and serious......look around and read alot. There really is alot to learn on here.....not everyone is a jerk!
