Converting 97 J spec to U.S.

Hey everyone. I kind of stumbled on this site while looking up rx-7s. Go figure.

Anyways, here's what I'm wondering. I saw a '97 RX-7 in the lot a few days ago in Okinawa. Does anyone know:

1) Average price range for converting it to U.S. standards?
2) Any reliable importers that I could contact about the car?

The car's in great condition, and has a nice price tag on it. I just don't don't want to buy it if I won't be able to afford to have it converted for U.S. customs at the port.

Any input would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!

You cannot convert a 97 to U.S Spec. A 97 is illegal in the States.

^This is also what I've heard , at least for anything that will have to be registered and plated. Strictly track/off road may be a different story.

No. They aren't safety tested I believe.

Yep. I've never looked into it, but again, that's what I understand from some work related training. No crash testing by NHTSA, no Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards Certification (MVSS), never been subject to recalls, or CAFE, or CARB or any of the others.

You could always pay to get it safety tested....I think they have to crash 4 or 5 of them.....

couildnt you say its for race purpose and then later on just swap your vins from a us spec, and if a cop asks or something just say you converted a us spec to RHD, i think it would work in TN becasue we no type of emisions, when you title a car they don even look at the vehicle

what is the site ?

Yes, that's why they print the large numbers on the firewall too.

That's when you go to jail and your car is impounded and crushed
