Compression and wheels

All,
first I would like to say I am very new to the the RX 7 3rd gen. In 1995 I went to buy a new car. it was a big toss up between the 300ZXTT and the RX 7. I bought the 300. okay flame away. It was totalled in a hit in run this year soooo I bought a RX 7. If I only knew then.................

Questions: I have been trying to read all I can about the compression issues with this car. I took it into Rotorary Performance here in Garland Texas, okay are they a good shop, they gave me the compression results
Front : 7.1, 7.2, 7.2
Rear: 7.1, 6.5, 6.5

they sugguest I do the engine. Sound right to you peoples?

next I have a set of wheels that I ran at thetrack on my 300. they are 17 x 9 with a 40 mm offset running a 255 40's on the rim. Will these fit the RX 3rd gen?

search regarding the compression. lots of threads on it. i think the numbers are ok.

regarding the wheels, you can search the suspension for that info as its been repeated 100 times, but yeah, that size is absolutely perfect for the 7.

I might be wrong but with those compression results I would agree on an engine rebuild. At least my specilist would. I have seen him doing one and if I am not mistaken he said that a good result should be above 10.

Your compression is a bit low, but it's consistent. The motor sounds like it is a bit tired, but nothing is "broken". For reference, my compression numbers using the factory Mazda tester (the new digital one) were all in the high 8's. However, using an old skool rotary engine tester, I saw numbers in the high 6's. If RP recommends a rebuild, then 6's are probably considered low for their gauge.

Chris and Ari (the owners of RP) are good friends of mine. Honest, knowledgeable, stand-up guys. You are very lucky to have a kick *** shop right in your town, trust me. Ask guys in Arizona or New Mexico what they do, lol. That said, the motor is tired. Might not be a bad idea to have them pull it and go through the entire engine bay, as well as complete maintenance (don't forget the fuel filter).

At any rate Chris and Ari won't steer you wrong

Like Sonny says, its partially a measurement issue.

I would disagree with those numbers implying an urgent need for a new motor. My engine pulls ALL 6s & Peter Farrell told me not to worry about it, YET. I ran in the 11s with my "weak" engine.

If you have money to burn, go for it and the shop you are dealing with is terrific but I don't think you are yet in dire straits.

There are lots of other things just waiting to go wrong so guard your money carefully.

All thanks you for your answers. Chris did say that the motor was tired and I should think about a rebuild when it was convenient to get the car into the shop. The thing runs so strong though. I did have them go over the car completely they repalced a turbo cooler line some bushings but he did say the car was in great shape. I do road track and he knows it he told me if I go take a trailer which is a norm for me anyways.

Ditto on the engine.

Those wheels will bolt on but they'll rub up front. In a 17x9, 255/40-17, I'd recommend a minimum offset of +45. Only way to get around hitting anything would be to run an adjustable coilover system and roll your fenders, however, I'd rather just get wheels that fit properly.

And BTW, sorry to hear about the Z. I used to have a '91 300ZX TT.
