Collectors article indicates FD is losing value.
i think its a perceived cost. i think if you actually itemized a bill for the FD vs most other cars, the FD is on the cheap end. you are replacing parts that on other cars would be considered major, like the engine, which is a stigma also.
just for example, a 30,000 mile service on a 308 Ferrari is $6,000 as the engine needs to come out so you can change the timing belt. the FD doesn't need half that kind of money that often.

I love the fact that mazda made such a great car that people are so afraid to own which gives people like me the great opportunity to drive such a great car at such a low price.
I have been eyeing RX8's here recently. Sure they don't have as much power, but one that runs like crap and probably needs a rebuild can be purchased for $2,000 with a really nice body and low miles. I think that is rediculous. I can rebuild the engine and have a really nice car for $4,000 all said and done and with 50-70K miles on the body.

the Rx8 is painfully close to a great car.

Perception is reality in the world of collector cars. Seems like every time I overhear a conversation about a rotary engine at a car show it's, "wow that's cool... no pistons. Heard they're unreliable though". I hate to say it, but when I read this article... all of the cars that are shooting up in value have the same rare/significant traits as the FD but they don't have the unreliable stigma, IMHO it's the only thing holding it back.
oh and for some reason people are happy to spend huge money fixing Porsches, and especially BMW's, but seem to resent having to change oil in a Mazda.

I'LL REPEAT the FD is not losing value it's GAINING value and at a fairly rapid pace.
Find me a nice FD for 20k
A friend sent me this link: 1993 Mazda rx7 - R1
Underhood painted (possible fire)
Stock shift **** replaced
Radio missing
Engine dirty for a well cared for sub 40k mile car
New battery with no tie down (car likely not driven for years and needed a battery to start)
Faded wiper arms, cowel etc.... clearly lots of time in the sun
etc..etc...
Probably a decent car but likely not worth my time or yours. Better off spending 25k for nice car if you can find one.
5 years ago I could find a dozen at any given time for 20k
AGAIN Today NOTHING!

who really cares how much the car is worth (to market experts)? I don't think anyone (on this site, at least) purchased their FD as a monetary investment.
fact is, the good ones will never be under 15k.
and the best, never under 20k.
and most of us have dumped additional grands and grands into these good/best FDs anyway.
until they ban gasoline and we are up to our armpits in glacier water, these cars are what they are.
