I just changed my oil. I put in Castrol GTX 10W-30, is this too heavy for winter weather? My car is going to be in the garage for most of the winter except for maybe an occasional cruise on good days.

I would think 10-30 should be fine.

You are going to daily drive it in the snow?

Do yourself a favor and get some snow tires and some sand bags to throw in the back....

My advice is to move to where it's warmer

I used to live in Michigan. I remember always having to get the car ready a few minutes early before going out-- the ritual warm up, ice scraping, wheel well unclogging, etc. Glad it was my old POS Chevy taking the abuse

I won't be driving mine when there is snow/ice on the ground.
I have no place park it though. My baby is gonna be sitting on the cold dark streets.

I drove mine in the snow once... Never did it again...

If you have hills in your area, better start praying. Without some decent tires, you won't get very far (I'm not talking about performance tires, those aren't for snow).

Snow = salted roads. Salt eats cars.

Signatures should be less than 460x200 in size, or no more than 10 lines of text. Combination image/text signatures should have no more than 5 lines of text.

There is currently no system to automatically check for these limits, so Admins and Moderators will be checking manually. Should your sig be found in violation, it will be removed without warning. It is your responsibility to then edit the sig and bring it within compliance. If you don't know how to edit an image and bring it under the 20K or 460x200 limit, don't use it! Figure out how to edit the image first or it will be removed.

this is your warning. change it.

When the weather turns cold, besides the coolant and oil changes, remember that you will run leaner. Cold air=dense air and will change your A/F mix! Even during those cold but sunny days where the road is in great shape..stay off the turbos! (Unless you tune for it)

An SUV - OR - 4 studded snow tires with siping and cheap wheels - OR - a locked and heated garage, so that on those rare warm, dry road days you can take it out for a spin and keep everything lubed. Don't forget to turn the A/C on as well.

The FD3S is absolutely the most dangerous car I have ever driven in snow. Ditto for wet pavement, it hydroplanes at the drop of a hat. It is a widow maker on anything except dry pavement.

Park it. Live to drive it next spring.

Instead of paying 2-300 for tires you would be better off buying a $200-$300 beater. FD's are NO GOOD in ANY kind of snow, thought im sure this advice wont sink in until it really snows for the first time. Thats how I had to learn. I just hope you dont total your car. good luck.

I don't know how in depth the testing was... But I know Mazda salt washed the FD prototypes for corrosion and rust testing on parts. But again... I don't know how much.

I daily drove mine for a year, here in STL, and it did fine. I did wash the salt off whenever I got the chance though... And driving in the snow is a bitch with such a car. Not impossible, but not easy..

I ran 10W30 and it seems to have done fine. Not driving it THIS winter though. Invested in a garage, and a beater.

To my knowledge chains are illegal as are tires with metal studs. At least they are illegal here in WI. Honestly, it isnt worth messing a car like the FD up in the snow.
