Code 16 indiates the EGR valve needs to be replaced. It's located on the outside (passenger side) of the Lower Intake Manifold. Here's a picture of the LIM. The EGR connects right in the middle (the area where you see two holes side-by-side, and a couple of studs). Unfortunately, I don't have a very good picture of the EGR itself.

EGR Blockoff: to simplify, reduce weight, and prevent possible catastrophic failure due to malfunctioning EGR valve (note: many japanese RX-7's don't use EGR valves, including the 99+ models):

EGR Switch Bypass: the EGR switch is the sensor that causes a check engine light ( code 16 ) when it doesn't detect the EGR valve opening and closing. This sensor tends to fail from heat, and give a false alarm even when the EGR valve is working properly.

Make sure your car hasn't had the recall done. I had the brake recall done on my car after I got it, but I really think it had already been done.

Anyhow, it's actually VERY easy for Mazda to do the brake line recall - both lines are accessible without removing anything - just remove 2 hose clamps, remove the line, and install the new one. Takes 5 minutes, tops, and a pair of pliers.

I shudder to think of Mazda techs doing the fuel line recall back in the day!
