clutch Q

ok i have a lightweight steel RB flywheel, ACT street/strip clutch, and B&M short shifter.. i spend about 0.2 seconds in 1st gear and its annoying as hell. it seems that now with the clutch mods its much easier to start in 2nd gear and i get minimal lag. what are your suggestions?

ok was the question really that dumb? here's another one, I've been powershifting lately, is this ok to do regularly? or is it somethin i should just do every now and then, or as little as possible, it grinded a few times til i got the hang of it, should i stop doing it? i'd also like an answer to the first question, you can be rude if i'm being dumb, i just wanna know.

YayeR,

I'm about to do the lightened flywheel thing as well. My understanding is that since the flywheel is lighter, it requires a little more clutch slippage to get going. Here's a quote from when I asked the question:

Yes, less load on the engine therefore less drag during the rev. Disadvantage is poor acceleration out of the hole for a launch, ie Drag racing. You need the inertia of the heavy flywheel because we lack torque, and since you don't produce much boost from a standing start, maybe 4 or 5 psi, the inertia from the flywheel spinning at high rpm helps to keep the engine from bogging out of the hole. The benefit on a road course is the flywheel is light and since you are slowing and accelerating rapidly the engine can recover the power faster if it doesn't have to work as hard to spin the flywheel to get the power to the ground!
So, in that sense, you are probably seeing what it's designed to do.

As far as shifting, I would say as long as you aren't grinding the gears, have fun!

ok, so i should keep shifting in 1st? or can i go start in 2nd when i don't feel like dealing with shifting again in .002 seconds

Well, if it was me, I would still start out in 1st, but I don't think there is much of a problem starting in 2nd. However, I wonder if that is putting more work on the clutch starting in 2nd than 1st, but that clutch should be able to handle it fine.

yeah, i just don't want to do whatever the previous owner did (he managed to fry the clutch in 16k miles, the mechanic who put in the ACT for me said that the clutch he took out was in the worst condition he had ever seen any clutch in 15 years).

If you’re gonna launch, as in drag racing. I see no reason what so ever to start in 2nd. I have a 9.5-pound flywheel and launch just fine without slipping the clutch. I just rev it up to between 3.5 and 4 thousand RPM and let it fly. As soon as the clutch engages you will be hover in the redline area until it hooks up. Then after a moments time, shift the bejesus out of it. Now you're sailing into second gear. No need to skip 1st gear which IMO is the most crucial gear.

Of course, the other week I broke my axle. That is more than likely due to my drive train being abused and having a heavy duty ACT clutch than launching out of first or having a lightweight flywheel.

yeah i wasn't talking about drag racing, i will definitely continue using 1st when racing. I was talking about daily driving. its annoying as hell especially in city driving.
