Clutch advice

Hey guys.

I'm in the process of installing my HKS T51r SPL turbo. I have all the much needed mods to do this. Won't list them for now.

I'm running a FC transmission in a FD (This came with the car when I got it, not sure why though).

To my question. I've got a Ogura Single Plate Clutch (For an FC) and am wondering whether it will be enough to handle the turbo I'm putting in. I think I read somewhere it can hold around 400 - 450 HP. Anyone speculate on this? (people who have used this clutch)

Also is there much difference between the FC and FD transmission ?

Am I better off just getting another clutch (one that I'm particularly fond of - Exedy D-Core Carbon Twin Clutch Kit FD) and changing over the transmission ?

Ideally I was looking at pushing out 500 +HP and I know that my current clutch will have it's limitations in doing this.

This car will mostly be used for street.

Cheers
Jase

Strange that you have a FC trans in a FD since it mounts completely differently. Do you still have a PPF installed somehow?

Are you sure it is not just a FD trans with a push/pull slave conversion for that clutch?

I prefer the twin disk clutches for cars making over 450whp, I find they last a lot longer and perform better.

I'm not exactly sure Banzai. My mechanic just mentioned to me that it's been converted to FC transmission and using a push type clutch.

Yeah I contemplating the twin plate clutch.

Just on another concern, if you have about 3.5mm of meat left on the clutch. Would it still be good to go for my application ?

Cheers

Contact the clutch manufacturer for specs on the disk.

Climb under the car and look for a PPF, if it has one then the trans is from an FD.

This is the reply I got back from ORC regarding the clutch thickness

Dear Jason McKenzie

BG-288:ORC-409D-01Z
The engine torque capacity of 409D is 420Nm(About 400PS).

However, performance is unmaintainable if there is more total wear volume of clutch parts than 1.2mm.

Intact thickness
・Pressure plate : 14.4mm
・Clutch disc : 4.7mm

Thanks.

You probably will want something like an Exedy or Carbonetics twin disk if you plan to utilize that turbo to its potential. Twin disks tend to be much easier to drive than a single plate of the same torque capacity.

cheers for the info pal.

What do you think the dyno number would be for this turbo, on pump gas, with a good twin plate clutch ?

Running 2000 secondary and 1600 primary injectors, rotary works throttle body, koyo radiator, greddy intercooler & compression tube, wallbro 400 fuel pump, south coast rotary seals, AEM water methanol kit and some other goodies which i can't remember atm.

The only thing really letting me down is the ORC clutch.

What are you using for engine management? If you are running the old Bosch 1600s I would recommend switching to the newer Bosch EV14 injectors. You will get a much smoother idle and better cruising AFRs. You should be able to break 500 rwhp with that setup providing your fuel system and ignition is sufficient.

Do you have resistors on the injector plugs? Do you know what they flow at? If you're using resistors, it's the old design. Is it the 1600cc bosches? If so then they're the old design.
