Pillowballs!!
Just replaced mine and it went away.
Take both Lower Control Arms off and I'm almost certain there will be play in them. When you move them just with your fingers you will hear a click click metal sound so imagine in a real driving situation where you brake hard or accelerate, that sound is your clunks.

I still get a little creaking sound in the rear especially going up driveways when one of the rear wheel is higher than the other. Its the lock and you need to adjust this by lowering it a little. The theory behind this is it will pull the hatch tighter to the car so theres less room for it to rattle.
And like gmonsen said try and shake your hatch struts and if there's play you'll hear a sound to go with it. I replace one of mine as it was really loose. Another thing you might want to check is the rear wiper motor. There are a few bolts which can come loose so try tightening them.
