Clearcoat finish

On my 93' R1 the clearcoat is pealing on the car, mainly on the spoiler, is there anything i can do to stop it from pealing or is there some expenses that i am looking at in the future?

you can use rubbing compound to make it look a bit better, you best bet is to sand it down and reclear it.

you cant really do much. once it peels it doesnt stop. this is due to the lack of protection. the oxidation (all paints need polish and wax...) and UV ray melts away your paint. so...i guess you should just save up and get it repainted.

I might be on a budget but I would never dishonor our car with a shitty paint job.

If your going to do something, do it right.

While this is getting OT, not all shops are created equal. If you go to any shop and get a $400 paint job, it's going to look like it's $400. Even Maaco has shops with good preppers/sprayers who can/will do a good job *IF* you spend the money. Yes, they also do the $3000+ paint jobs as well if that's what you want.

good point.

I dident mean to step on anyones toes about "Macco" but the name general suggests cheap paint jobs. Granted not everyone can afford a 3-4k paint job I know. My friend's father did all the prep work on a mustang i belive then had macco paint it and it turned out great. Regardless for paints the car, check out their work and make sure your getting what you pay for.

Well since you live in Chicago, I suggest you take it to The Body Shop on Western (between Bryn Mawr and Peterson). They mainly work on Benz's but they do excellent work. The nice thing is that if you do your comparison shopping for the work, he's willing to negotiate the price.

Been a long time since I painted cars, but if it's just clearcoat. I used to spray min. 3 coats of clear over base paint. If your base coat is ok. You can probably get away with lightly sanding down clearcoat and have painter just spray clear coat over base. Make sure he uses "flexiblizer" in the clearcoat.

Don't quote me...it has been a really long time. Ask a local shop!
