Chris Ott Tuning?

Hey guys. has anyone had their FD tuned by Chris Ott? I have read and heard good things about him, but I had heard and read good things about my last tuner and let's just say I wouldn't let him tune my car again. I have an appointment with Chris next Friday but I wanted to make sure it was worth the money.

If you had a tune: Does he spend a good amount of time getting the car to cruise and idle nicely? I assume he will tune it for power very thoroughly.

Thanks in advance.

I've known MANY people that have had a car tuned by Ott. I do know that they know what they're doing. I can also easily say that their tuning is very conservative as they have to back and represent their name at Rotary Performance.

Well I'm not too worried about him being conservative. He knows what the cars can handle. If he thinks my car should stop at a certain point I would be inclined to agree. I know he tuned his FD to 17psi and some others to 17psi. My car has all the required supporting mods to support 17psi. My v mount and fuel are even overkill for the stock 99 twins I have. I just want the car to be very driveable too besides hauling ***. Some tuners do not spend much time adjusting idle and cruise though.

Rotary Performance has been in the rotary business for many years. I don't think you'll have a problem with Chris's tuning.

He's tuned my car and I'm very happy with it. I'm more on the conservative side but he tuned my stock internals/stock turbos/stock injectors to 303whp at 12psi. Steve Kan and Brian Cain here in the Dallas area are also superb tuners.

Chris has been tuning a long long time and is superior to some of the other tuners mentioned in this thread. He's tuned my car on several occasions over the years, he knows his stuff

There are also reasons why some tuners/shops are still in business. They do good work. Can't say that for all.

I would be inclined to agree with that. I appreciate your input.

No problem. I also should add that although I now live on the other side of the country, Chris always takes the time to chat with me on the phone and give me his informed opinion on varying products and modifications. Ari also is a great guy who's been in this game around 20 years

I appreciate your feedback. I know Ari and Chris are both good. I have just been burned once and money wasted so I wanted to see how others liked their experience. I think a lot of tuners in this business get jaded and burned out on tuning people's cars. They start putting less effort into each car. Just plug in one of their previous MAPs that sorta fits/ do some AFR tuning and tell you that's it.

I have quite a few mods on my car and have done quite a bit of work so I hope everything is up to snuff. I don't want to drive all the way up there and find out they can't tune it for one reason or another. I don't have a boost controller but Chris tells me I don't need one with the Power FC.

My mods:
-Large streetport (new housings)
-2mm seals (2 piece)
-motor was balanced and the ports flowed (I know there is some controversy as to whether this is worthwhile but it didn't really cost much)
-850/1200 injectors
-supra pump
-99 twins
-v mount
-cool air intake
-metalit cat
-KS catback
-downpipe (exhaust manifold and downpipe ceramic coated)
-UIM,LIM and turbo intake, and y-pipe ceramic coated
-banzai block off plates
-HKS Twin Power Ignition (to be installed prior to tune)

I am hoping to make at least 350hp. I think more is possible as long as everything is working right.

Chris tuned my car to 333 without the 99 twins, so you should be good for 350. Chris is one great person to deal with, and he is exceedingly knowlegeable about our cars. If I did not live on the other side of the country, I would take my car to him in a heartbeat. I used to drive over 10 hrs to get to him. You should not be dissapointed.

Well, got the tune Friday. Car makes good power now and runs a whole lot better. However, didn't make as much power and torque as i should have. My best run was only 328 rwhp and 271ft/lbs. Chris said there is a restriction somewhere cause the numbers start dropping off around 6500rpm. He thinks it may be my cat. It is a random technology cat which should flow well but I have a suspicion that it may be clogged or melted due to a lot of overly rich tuning initially after the rebuild. The cat had glowed red at idle. I may have destroyed it. I will take off the cat and have a look soon to make sure. If it is ruined I may have to go with one of Rotary Performance's cats. Even though I hate to buy another one I hope it is that simple. Here's a pic

Why not hollow out what you have and worry about a new one at emissions time? Or can you not get away with that in Texas?

Well I can't figure out how to post a damn pic I guess. Anyway, if it is ruined then hollowing it out may be a short term solution but I don't want to deal with the stink and the noise from a midpipe.
