check this pic out, is it normal?

I have been getting a bit of grinding through my trans latley with an associated movement of the gearstick so today I decided to check the underside of my FD.

Firstly I thought it might have been a cracked or damaged PPF but upon removal and inspection I was suprised to see it was actually in mint - as condition.
So next I checked my motor mounts and I have found that the passenger side rear mount ( its a right hand drive BTW ) does look a little worse for wear than the drivers side one, the rubbery bit looks squashed.

But while I was under there I looked at the bottom of my gearbox and noticed it wasnt really horizontal with the ground, it dips down to the left quite a bit ( see pic) and yet I checked my gearstick alignment up top and its perfrectly centered.

Is it supposed to be on a lean like that?

ha ha very funny.

Anyway
I just managed to remove my engine mounts and contrary to what I said before I think they are both actually in quite good nick ( see pics )
So if the PPF is fine and the mounts are good, what else could cause my gearstick to move on acceleration and braking? along with a slight grinding noise?

I had the same problem. I did the same thing you did. Look at the PPF and it looked okay. Well There was some one selling a "tranny brace" so I bought it from him. Well I got a Mazdaspeed PPF instead. So I said what the heel? Well when I removed the Stock PPF out, there was a crack half way down from the top. My point is, ou should remove the PPF because just by looking at it is hard to tell sometimes.

PPF = Power Plant Frame It connects the tranny to the diff... the PPF is probably not causing your rough shifts.

I have removed the PPF, its sitting in my garage leaning against the wall and it looks sweet - as, no cracks no nothing, just lots of dirt

I already had the TRANS and DIFF supported on jacks with blocks of wood.
I then simply undid the bottom nuts off the engine mounts, took the outlet and inlet IC hoses off and my sway bar ( so when the engine was raised it didnt hit it) and then jacked up the TRANS jack a few inches higher so It revelaed the engine mount nuts high enough to get a tool in there to do the job.
Pretty easy really, do a SEARCH there is heaps on it.

BTW
Ive just tried to reinstall my motor mounts but I've run into a problem.
It seems the mounts dont line up with the sub frame. The engine sits about a good inch to the right ( facing towards the front of car) and I cant jack the trans up high enough to fit the mounts to my engine cos the top of the gearbox is hitting the trans tunnel. When I lower the trans the engine goes back into alignment but I can tighten the bolts in this position.

Question -

Should I get someone to push the side of the engine while I line up the bolts underneath?

Should I maybe support the trans up with the jack in a different postion so it doesnt go out of alignment when raised? although I dont know where you'd do this)

I currently have the PPF out, would reinstalling the PPF keep the trans/engine straight when raising the trans on a jack or does having the PPF installed actually prevent you from jacking up the Trans in the first place?

what would actually cause my engine to move to the right when raising on a jack from the tranny?

Any help here would be great

I have a friend coming over tonight, should I just get him to push the engine across form above while I install the mounts underneath?
