Charging Battery

Car sitting in garage (temperatures in low to mid forties). Weather has been bad so have not started 3rd Gen RX-7 in three weeks. When I tried to start it, only got the hummm noise (no clicking). Checked voltage on battery and it was 11.5. Battery is Everyready from Sam's club and is two years old. I was going to charge it but was wondering if I should disconnect the wires from the battery first? I know that I have read where the computers in newer cars can be damaged easily.

These are not 'newer cars'.

It is generally jump starting that will kill sensitive electronics, not charging. I would not worry about it.

You should consider a trickle charger to keep battery charged if you go long period without driving the FD.

I would take the battery out and charge it. When my batt went dead, I charged it for about 5 hours and it was good as new.

If I know I'm not going to drive it for a few days I disconnect the battery.

Get you a Ctek battery charger and don't look back. Read some of the reviews on it. I have two and they work great especially on Optima batteries. The 3300 even has a setting for the Optima.

I had the same problem, and I didn’t like disconnecting my battery because then my alarm would not work. So I decided to get a Battery Tender which can charge and top off the battery if it’s low. I have used it multiple times on my 7 and it works great, even comes with a set of cables you can leave in your car so you can just plug and unplug the Battery Tender. I also used it to charge my brothers car battery to full when it was dead due to not being used for 2 years, it took 2-3 days but it worked and now his car starts again.

Just under 50 well worth the price and gets great reviews.

^Yep. Besides the FD I have an old antique car, both are stored for extended periods. I have one of these for each car.... http://batterytender.com/automotive/...emisphere.html
The quick connector is a nice touch.

I was going through batteries about every two years...even with disconnects. I have one for each car. In addition to being able to get the in the car with a fully charged battery, they've both paid for themselves.

If you have or plan to get an Optima battery, I would stay away from the Battery Tender and look into the Ctek. I had Advance Auto charge my Red and Yellow Top battery overnight and they still both failed their battery test. I took the battery home put it on my Ctek and took it back and it passed their test. They use a Battery Tender. It is the charger of choice for most high-end automobiles.

The video says it all.

I have a Battery Tender plugged into a wall timer, set to charge the battery for 30 minutes every day.
