CATS clogged and no money for a suitable legal replacement... what should i do?

so i open up a space (about 1 in) btwn my cat and downpipe to see if the cat was the root of my boost issue.... take her out for a spin and...
but the problem is the car is EXREMELY loud (i knew it would be but damn) and the fumes nearly made me sick.
i dont have the money to drop on a bonez or some other name brand... what should i do?
also.... i dont want to attract the attention of cops b/c of the loudness...

I would give you my stock cat if you were close. I'm sure there are a few members closer to you that would give theirs away also...its not like there is a real high demand for them. To bad you need one where you live

dip into your replacement engine fund, which all FD owners should have and buy a used CAT.

This is a question, NOT a suggestion... what if he ran a little water injection to heat the cat up (even more)? Is there any PRACTICAL way of cleaning a cat up once it's clogged?

just take out the stock cat, get a pipe (steel implement of anykind) and drive it throught the cat, knocking out all that honeycomb crap. Once the cat is hollow, put it back in, plus that way, it still looks like you have a cat just in case anyone checks. Voila! Free easy fix.

well, if you don't have the money for a high flow-what choice does he have, at least until he can buy a better one. And I used to live in sac (citrus heights, actually), And I've heard (wink, wink) that you don't have to sacrifice performance because of smog, when all you have to do is just kick the smog tech a little incentive.

About a year and a half (until may 2003), lived on greenback near san juan, almost right across the street from dairy queen. Kept the 7 in the garage, but my white tundra was always parked out front. I've been to lemoore once, one of my old GF's aunts lived there. But I really like living out here in the desert, no smog, and long straight highways with 70mph speed limits.

i envy you my friend....
lemoore sucks ***... which is why im now living in sactown with my friend (since getting out of the service). actually i hate california overall, but i think im going to be stuck here for at least another six months

im glad i know what the problem is (boost issue)... i was going nuts troubleshooting. but now i cant do much about it until i get some spare cash (without dipping into the rebuild savings plan)

One of the reasons why it's so hard to "slip the guy an incentive" these days is because when California mandated the new dyno smog a few years ago, not very many of the "friendly" shops had the money to do it. All those little hole in the wall smog shops that would "cooperate" decided not to be smog stations any more. Only the larger and more legit places were able to drop the money needed for a dyno.

All of my friends that had sources for getting their cars through no longer have them now. It's definitely not anywhere near as easy as it used to be.

Do you have a boost controller? If not, dont gut the cat. You dont want to overboost your engine and end up paying for a rebuild. Post in the west section or the for sale section asking for a stock cat. A few people will give you theirs as long as you pay for shipping.

Not only is it harder to find a shop to pass you through along with that the price to pay went up. Now in most cases it's cheaper to just put up the money for the replacement smog parts (unless of course your car is heavily modded).

I live in ca. and junked my stock cat. I got a 40 dollar cat off of Ebay. I spent a few bucks at the muffler shop having the old ends welded on. The total cost was under 100.00. Before that my cat became restricted and I cut it in half, gutted it and had it welded back up. I needed a working cat so I got the Ebay one and passed Ca. Smog with a street port. I had to do a few other things to the fuel mixture etc.
