Is this car worth it?
Is this car worth it?
I just checked out a FD yesterday
1993 MB Touring with 68k miles on it. Original paint
Body is in decent shape. Some dings, dangs and 2 scratches; stone chips on the front bumper.
Interior is in fair shape for a 12 yr old car.
Comes with some aftermarket 3 spoke rims.
Original motor, turbos, transmission.
Boost pattern is ok. getting 10-8-10 then bleeding to 9psi around 6500 rpm.
Has downpipe but still on stock main cat.
Clutch, brakes have been replaced.
AST is cracked and needs replacing.
Cat-back is on it's last legs.
Rad is stock so most likely needs to be replaced.
Seller was asking 14.6k
I talked him down to 13.6k
Does that sound like a good price?

The car idles at a solid 800 RPM.
WIth A/C, it idles on around 900 - 1000 rpm.
Vaccume at idle is at around 15-17 inches.
Boost comes on at 2500 rpm.
10 psi by around ~3000rpm
8psi at 4500 and back to 10 psi up to around 6500 rpm.
then it bleeds to 9psi.
The owner, (2nd owner) only drove for 16000 miles in his 4 yrs of ownership. He is around 50 and is a VP of some investment company. 1st owner was a 50 yr old accountant that traded the car for a SLK.
I don't think the last owner drove the car hard at all.....
We checked for coolant on the ground / engine and there were none other then some creeping out of the AST tank seems (thats where the crack is)
No Hot start problem. Car started up fine after 10 minutes.
Slight surface rust on the rear wheel wells(on the bottom where the mud flaps should be). Probably from stone chips

its not normal but it does happen on some cars. i would suspect the main cat might be slightly clogged and this is causing the boost to drop off slightly.
AST cracks make me nervous as the potential for overheating is there. I could be wrong, but I don't think that a compression check will show a bad coolant seal. My original motor went at 35k miles so take that for what it's worth. I've never seen rust on an RX7. Has it ever been hit or resprayed?
Overall, I would think you might be able to find a better car for close to that price or maybe a little more. It sounds like it needs some $$/tlc.
BTW, silicon hoses are done too.
Actually, the price is pretty good for a Canadian car. Can't really compare to the prices of a US car. It's hard enough finding a unmolested car ... haha
I can buy from the US, but then there are duties and bumper conversions that needs to be done before the car gets certified and that would offset the price advantage....
I've been actually looking for 2 yrs already. None really good ones come up...

Ast $150
Catback $500
Depends if used and whatnot. And that's american dinero.
$12k at the most. We have to remember that unfortunately the value of these cars is starting to subside as opposed to the prices of 1.5 - 5 years ago. 2 years ago that car is a definite $14k...I don't believe so now.

If that wasn't the case, I would be driving an US car already.... haha

Is the price 13.6k Canadian dollars? If so, that is a very good deal. If you have been looking for 2 years, you should have a pretty good idea of what you will have to pay
