Car wont start, help!

Okay, I was on my way to class this morning on the interstate. I was driving about 70 and all of the sudden the car started to decellerate to about 50, then I noticed that I had NO power. No power brakes, etc. I pulled off to the side and tried to start the car, but no luck. When I do try to start the car, it jumps back and forth like crazy! It acts like it starts, but it "idles" (if you can call it an idle) at about 500RPM but giving it gas doesn't do a thing, and it does the whole jumping and bucking like it is having a heart attack! Does anyone have any idea what this could be?? My precious 7 is sitting on the interstate right now!!!!

Maybe the vacuum line to the MAP sensor came unplugged or the TPS sensor came unplugged? Hopefully it's something simple like that.

It seems to be getting enouch power from the battery, I don't have a voltometer but I dont think thats the problem. When I first pulled off the road it didn't do ANYTHING when I tried to start it, but after several tries, now it'll kinda start for about a minute before it dies, but the engine is jumping back and forth like its having a seizure. I don't really know what else to say being I'm at school and can't go out and mess with it right now. How would I check the MAP and TPS sensors?

Thanks for the help!

See that hose disconnected from the black rectangle box, yea thats the map sensor. Make sure you plug that hose into the box.

Well I got the car back to my house, but am still trying to figure out what is going on with my poor FD.

Has anyone ever experienced this problem im having? The car barely turning over, holding at a really low RPM before dying, and the engine shaking the entire time its TRYING to run? It shakes the inside of the car like there's an earthquake, but from the outside it sounds and looks like its running semi-normal, except the engine is jumping all over. AND there is no responce at all when I press the accelerator.

Ouch.. It might be blown.. I've seen few and sounds very familiar..

Let me ask you.. Can you in anyway get the RPM up??

Also, has the engine replaced before?? Do you have PFC??

Check your crank angle sensor connections.

Had you just filled up the gas tank? Could be water in the gas.

Another possibility is that a major vacuum line has come loose (although you said you checked all the hoses).

Are you getting spark?

Hope it's not an apex seal. Had you floored it just before it acted up, or were you just cruising at constant speed?

If you vacuum lines and electrical connections look good then I think a compression check would be the next logical step.

Alright, I went out and have been playing around with it for a while. I eventually got it so that it will stay running by itself without the engine wanting to jump out of the car. It is now somewhat responsive when I give it gas, but it sounds terrible. It makes a put-put-put noise the whole time its running, which makes me cringe and I dont want to leave it running very long. I haven't tried, but I doubt it would even go anywhere if I did try. My boost gauge is showing a nearly 8 lbs of vac and after I give it gas, sometimes itll go down to the normal 18-20. Could it be the fuel pump went out and its barely pumping?

When it happened I was cruising at about 75MPH, the I just noticed the car start to decellerate to 73... then 70... then 67.... 65... and by then I was trying to figure out what was going on, and not too long afterwards, I noticed that I didn't have power brakes, so as the car started to slow past 40, I pulled the car off the road, turned it off, and tried starting it again. But it wouldn't start at all.

If it were a blown seal, from what I read I wouldnt think it would act like it did. Gradually slowing down and loss of power...? And then just NOT starting?? I don't know though...

The engine was rebuilt at 62,000, it currently has 76,000. I have no PFC I hadn't JUST filled the tank, it was about 3/4 full.

I appreciate all of your help!

Well, there is no cat, so I don't think its clogged... I guess that's one less thing to check.

You might want to test your fuel pump output. I dont think you need to jump to the conclusion that the motor is fried until you check that out and a compression check

I had something very similar happen to me. I had the car floored on the on-ramp and -phoomp- lost power. Car wouldn't idle in the stop and go traffic so I had to keep it at 3-4k rpms. Vacuum was about 10 in HG.

Turns out it was the MAP sensor. I only repeated it because you said "as far as you could tell."

And because I ran so rich during the 30 minutes I was limping the car home, the plugs were fouled and had to be replaced. (hint)

You mentined you lost power in your brakes when pulling off the freeway - was the car dead when you came to a stop?

Alright, will test the fuel pump, double check the the MAP sensor, and check my plugs. The car was dead by the time I came to a stop.

Check for engine codes too. If your car is running that bad then I would expect there are some.

check your crank angle.. who installed your car.. those angle sensor plugs could be damaged..

Pull them off; look inside and make sure they look ok.. make sure to look at both plugs..

your symptoms sounded a lot similar to mine, if you had a bunch of check lights come on, then it could be your alternator.

Okay, I double and triple checked every hose that I could see/get to. The engine is also getting spark, I've determined. I haven't gotten ahold of a fuel pressure gauge yet though. Just trying to keep you guys updated. If you have any more suggestions let me know.

Map Sensor, Intercooler, Intercooler Hose, Alternator, Fuel, Crank Angle Sensor, Compression Test. If you rev it up under the hood does it gain rpm's??? What were some of the last things you did to the car before this incident???

i concur

I agree, check the plugs, and quick question, I assume there is a rats nest in there still? Could be a bad hose/solenoid? Check the TPS plug. Make sure its clean (being near the oil filter) and make sure it is well plugged in, I had mine back out of the clip one day on a cruise, and it put me on the side of road with the car bucking madly. Check your sensors everywhere. Sounds like to me a loose or faulty connection somewhere. Good Luck.
