Car runs really rich, any ideas

My car seems to be running richer than before. It has always seem to run rich but it seems way worse than it use to. When I pulled the plugs they where black, they use to be a nice whitish grey color. I checked the new plugs after 30 miles and they where black. When the car is idling I can smell the unburnt fuel. The car does ide a little rough but it always has for the three years I have owned it. The exhast tip is very black and even the bumper has black residue on it. It also will pop sometimes on deceleration in second gear. One other thing I have noticed is when I start the car it idles baby smoth and then its like something switches on and it starts to idle rough. Also when I back up it wants to die when I let of the gas. Mods include greddy PE and a custom stock box made to draw air from the side of the radiator. The only thing I have checked is the airpump which is working fine. Any ideas would be greatly appriciated.
thanks

Have you ever changed your water temp sensor or your oxygen sensor? It sounds like your stuck in open loop running very rich when it should be going to closed loop, a less rich fuel pattern.
In english: it runs rich when you start up and the cpu gathers data from the water temp sender and the oxygen sensor to lean the fuel mixture out (closed loop) as it approachs operational tempeture. Let me ask you this what kind of gas mileage are you getting? and how many miles are on the car?

It does sound like one of the sensors is going, or has gone bad. Ai temp, Water temp, O2, are just a few that will cause the computer to play it safe if they are not working correctly. Look for codes by grounding the diagnostic pin (10) to ground and turn the key to on. If something is wrong you will see the engine light flash, but I'm sure you already know this if you have had the car this long. Post the codes if you find any, and don't forget to clear them.

Thanks guy's, I have not checked for error codes yet. I have never done this so i will be trying this tomorrow. Yes I am getting really crappy gas millage and the car has 60,000 miles on it. It almost seems like it is geting worse and worse. The smeel of raw fuel seems more potent than even a week ago.

Rich Running

I would change the water temp sensor and the oxygen sensor if it hasnt been done already. This is most likely your problem. The water temp sensor is located to the right of your thermostat housing, and the oxygen sensor is located on the downpipe. I would try the water temp sensor 1st. If you take it out and want to test it put the end of it (not the electrical connecter side) in a pot of boiling hot water and with a volt meter check the voltage of it as the temp. rises. The procedure is also listed in iluvmyrx7.com go to the maintence manual and look under cooling system.

Hi Jon,

I think I know the cause of your problem. The nefarious and evil Greedy PE!!! It has been known to wreak havoc on third gens, to include inconsistent boost and broken apex seals. I would hold an exorcism as soon as possible to rid your FD of the Greddy PE...
