Angry Can't speed shift into 3rd, Why?????

Hey, i got a little problem. Everytime i go to speed shift at redline into 3rd, it wont let me shift into 3rd. It just feels like something is blocking my way into 3rd. It will then grind as if i missed a gear. Now i know its not me cause i know my 3rd gear well and with my previous sport cars, i never missed 3rd. If i shift slower, it will go in. Why??? Any ideas??? It just feels impossible to nail that shift. I mean, the shift is just straight up but it wont let me shift it if im speed shifting.

When your in 2nd push straight up and it should automatically slide over into 3rd......test it and see first!!!

If it doesnt your syncroes (sp?) are probably messed up. 3rd is a gear that alot of people miss, one way to make sure you never miss 3rd is to get a short throw shifter.

you can still miss 3rd with a short throw, just very unlikely.

It's happened to me too.

It's very frustrating... believe me I know. I would take it to the track and try to speed shift from 2nd to 3rd, and it feels like there's no way in hell that shifters going to slot in. I've tried to slam it in, and it went into 5 more than a few times. I got so frustrated I went out and bought a B&M short shifter and a few quarts of Redline Shocktech heavy duty tranny fluid... problem solved! Hope you find a solution!

i dont think its my clutch. It still grabs good and i easily chirp. The car has 30k miles on it too. I now think its the syncro.

I highly doubt it is your synchro. Wen they go it uasually just grinds, and it is usually th 5th gear synchro from missing third. I am thinking it might me your shift linkage. I had a friends that has that same problem with his supra. I would also check you fluid leavel. This is kinda a long shot but I am pretty sure that third gear is the highest gear in the trans so maybe it isn't getting enough fluid, but DO NOT OVERFILL YOUR TRANS. the third thing is try bleading your clutch. THis is another long shot but it might have air in it ans might not be totally dissingauging.(spell???) I would try the simple things first and then check out the linkaage.

i believe it is just you. when i first got my car i was coming out of a jeep with a manual and had driven my friends mustang a lot. so when i started sped shifting i ALWAYS missed third i would jsut grind it out. then i figured out i was trying to push it over to the right to much. you have to literally throw it just about straight up. dont worry about going over just up, and it will hit it naturally. good luck, scott

ok, maybee it is just me. I am going to the track on friday and i'll know for sure if its me. I still think that i have a problem with the trans or something to do with it. It really pisses me off though. I dont know what to do? I think i did overfill my trans fluid but how would that have an affect?? It doesnt feel heavy or anything.

Well the shift gate in the 93 is the worst. It was redesigned in 94 but there are several reasons your missing it at high RPM's. The biggest reason is the whole drive train on the 3rd gen is mounted on rubber bushings to help transfer torque to the wheels. With torque transfer comes twisting of the drive line. At High RPM's your motor is twisted around and so the rest of the driveline follows suit. Your 3rd gear is not in the same place as it was at lower RPMS so its not you its the car. This is why the car uses up motor mounts. Just think what it must be like in a single turbo or 3 rotor. This is why PFS chains the motor on that side of the mount to keep it from twisting as far. Cool eh? As a side note the short shifter will make it even more difficult to find. Not only does it shorten the throw but it makes it closer from side to side. Sure the shift will "feel" more precise and you will definatley know when your in gear but it wont help you get there at high RPMS. Most of the time I miss 3rd it goes right into 5th. Instead grinding like before. A short shifter will hurt you and help you all at the same time. Makes it a closer pattern but at the same time gives you the precise feel you need. Like the previous guy said. Its going to be more of a straight shot up at high rpms. By the way I have a mazda trix short shifter and it feels great and I wouldnt go back to stock even though its not much help at high rpms. Like you mentioned I also had a Mustang with a Hurst comp plus shifter. I wish they made that one for the RX-7. It was by far the best shifter ever made.

I'm so glad that Nike178 brought this up. My car was running fine the whole time i had it( 3 yrs. ), and it just happen the same thing that Nike178 had discribed. every time i'm racing somebody, I just can't shift into 3rd instead it will go write in to 5th. and if i'm driving normal it goes right in. Is it something major that i have to worry about? or is there anyway that i can cure this problem??

pls. help ZoomZoom or anybody!!!!!!!!!!!!

The problem is excentuated when your synchros are worn. They dont do thier job of synchronizing the gear and shaft to keep from grinding and provide smooth shifting at high rpms. Shift slow its less expensive. These cars are aging to the point they dont run like new anymore and need serious work to maintain that level of performance.

hey guys. Today i actually hit 3rd gear for the one of a few times i tried. Once in a while i'll get lucky and it wont grind. The trick is that i just do the process slower and i have no problems. The car still chirped 3rd so i guess im not losing much time doing it a tad slower. We will see on friday when i run the car for the first time. Anyone have some tips for me?? Remember, my car is stock.
