Can't seem to put my car in reverse

Yesterday I was driving around and when I pulled up at my freinds house to drop him off, I couldn't reverse out of the drive way. Wouldn't go into the gear. So he gave me a put and I drove home thinking that letting sit overnight will help and this morning still cant get into gear. What do you think it could be, and what can I do to fix it. Thanks

Is your car auto or manual? Assuming you're talking about a manual car, have you noticed any irregular actions when using reverse or other gears before (such as grinding)? How many miles on the tranny?

I know the problem! It's that you suck at teh Rx-7! Just kidding man. It's probably just a bad synchro. Transmissions kind of suck after 90-100k miles. Check the sig and hopefully you can figure out who this is. Good luck with the car bro.

Its a manual and I have no idea how many miles my tranny has. All the other gears a perfect except 5 which grinds every once and a while. Never had problems with my reverse. And SikoPathx whats up.

I have the same problem. Is you 5th a bit higher as position goes? Like 5th takes you to puch it a bit farther out and to the front of the car to get in gear?

I think fith and reverse are on the same shaft. Alot of missed shifts from 2nd to 3rd when actually you smash it into fifth instead. will cause your reverse to lock out . Had my syncrose replaced and solved the problem.

I have the same problem with my FD after a long night of driving her hard, to fix it just pop her in 1st pull forward a little bit then drop her right into reverse, works everytime for me

My 5/R is gone too. I couldn't figure out how to talk it back into coming back. My old roommate's car did the same thing a couple years ago and it came back somehow. My car just sits in a garage now, so I'm not worried about it. I'll be rebuilding the tranny this winter when I do all the other projects anyway. Hopefully it will come back though because its really frustrating.

Do a search, you'll find some info like I did. I couldn't shift into reverse when I had my FD and the tranny had to be rebuilt. Good luck with yours.

It's just a tranny. You don't need to go a rotary especialist for that.

Cool

Heres the easy fix to buy you some time roll the car backwards slowly while engaging reverse at the same time its worked for me on 3 seperate incidents.Once you do it you won't have any problem getting it into reverse again unless you misshift 3rd again ,the first time it happened to me took me about 2months to figure that one out.

^^wait wait, explain that again??

so if you misshift 3rd, the shaft for the reverse will be out of sync and cause it not to go in?

When you misshift third you usually end up in fifth, and reverse is on the same shaft so it some how effects the reverse. This has happened to me about three times in the past 2years,just roll it slowly backwards while its rolling step on the clutch while putting it in reverse.
