Can't seem to control boost

hey guys, just got back into my 94 and I am having troubles controlling the boost. I made a lil manual boost controller and put it in line just like on the robinette website here http://www.robrobinette.com/boost_controller.htm.
But no matter what i do, it's not doing anything??? The gauge is showing me hitting 15 psi in first gear (only did it twice) but I don't really know what to look for now? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Daniel

*Edit* Mods are downpipe, stock mid-cat, and apexi muffler for exhaust and cheap bastard intake. Nothing else

The car boosts to ~7psi just on the wastegate? Are you sure the boost controller is fully open?

I would not use what you have currently. The valves can be inconsistent and VERY hard to dial in. If you want to go homemade, make one that has a spring and ball bearings inside. If you search I think there are a few threads that go into detail about what parts you need.

over 10psi is dangerous my friend if you are on the stock ECU

O and I would make sure you removed the pill from the lines before you added the valve. If you just hook the lines directly to the actuators with no pill or controller you should see ~7psi

Since it doesn`t appear that you have done anything to your ECU or fuel system, I don`t think I would let it go to 15 PSI if I were you. From what I understand, the factory fuel system is only good to about 12 PSI of boost & after that, lean city, detonation & then engine rebuild time. Something to think about. Be careful.

I just looked at the old line and it did have the pill in it. So I guess i will just remove the boost controller and see what happens from there. But the controller does have a ball and spring it. I was just using the robinette website as a guide on how I hooked up the contoller. But I am gonna go pull the controller and see what I can get from it then. Thanks alot guys, I apprecaite it very much

so wait, you are running a restrictor pill and an MBC on the same line? What is the car's setup right now? and are you messing with both the precontrol and the wastegate?

When you say boosting like crazy, what do you mean? Are you seeing levels to 15 PSI like you said you were getting before?

No, no pill and MC in the same line. And no I am not messing with both of the lines, just the wastegate.

And yea when i say boostin like crazy still, it is still rising too high.

Are you sure the lines are even hooked up at both ends? sounds like your wastegate isn't opening. If i'm understanding correctly, you had a problem with it over boosting so you decided to add the valve to lower the boost? Is this correct? If your car was boosting the correct 10 psi then there is no reason to add a boost controller for more boost. You can't exceed 10 psi on the stock computer or it will fuel cut.

are you overboosting before transition? The wastegate does not control boost until the secondary turbo comes online.

If you ask me, you may just want to install new pills on both the precontrol and wastegate and be done with it. For now though pull the pills out of both lines and keep the MBC out. That should drop your boost to a safe level.

but if you don't want to deal with restricter pills, just install an MBC on both precontrol and wastegate. Or buy an EBC.

Personally I think your best bet would be to get a PFC and use the PFC to control boost with the stock solenoids. Then you can adjust the precontrol and wastegate individually.

Correct, the car was overboosting badly before the MBC and now it is still doing the same thing. The lines are for sure hooked up. But I will pull it all apart again get that pill out of the precontrol as well. It just stopped raining so I will get out there and try messing around with it. Thanks alot guys, will keep yall updated

Use the ball-spring controller and no pill. Cap off the other line on the actuator. If you don't have high temp rubber caps, use a section of hose and something to plug it (golf tee with zip tie even!)

Start with the controller full open and slowly dial it tighter until boost goes up to where it belongs.

If that's not working check the actuator and hose for leaks.

Ok so I cap off the other other line that is right next to the wastegate line?? The "prespool" one?

And I never had the pill in line with the MBC at the same time.

cap off the other line on both actuators and and run two MBC's. Or cap off the other line on both actuators, and run just a straight hose right (no boost controller, no pill, no factory solenoids). It should run at spring pressure. If it doesn't, you have some other kind of mechanical problem.

Follow Rob's diagram, but delete the line that is labeled "outflow from actuator" and make sure it's securely capped off on the actuator side.

Now open the ball-spring adjustment so that air blows freely through and start from there.

If you have another controller for the prespool actuator, set it up in the same way.

Daniel,

There is a good chance that your turbos have built in restrictors in the nipples that connect to the hoses. If that is the case, the needle valve controllers won't do any good. I suggest that you get yourself a good electronic boost controller.

I mentioned in another thread that the stock pills with a few mods could produce 15 psi on a stock ecu, but no one wanted to believe me. Having nipples on the restrictors is the same as having the stock pills in the lines.

Glad to hear that your intake is flowing plenty of air

Adam
