Canadian FD overheating

Hi Guys ...
I need some help regarding my fevered 93 FD. My car is totally stock. I have replaced the Themostat, however by bebe is still over heating. When I am crusing the highway the Temp stays normal but when I am on idle/traffic for 20+mins she goes high. My coolent Mixture is 50/50.

What I have noticed is that both of my fans go on at the same time. Is that normal?

I have looked over the forum and I would like to know what should be done 1st 2nd 3rd etc etc ...

Please help me out ... Montreal Summers are short and I miss driving my bebe.

I wish I can give you a definite answer but I have the stock gague. The temp almost tops over the "H"igh mark but I've ordered an aftermarket temp reader. Also when my park in my garage I can hear the coolent boiling and my garage, 20feet by 20feet, feels like a sauna; even after 2-3 hours the engine is hot.

if the stock gauge ever moves, you have SERIOUS problems.

I'm not sure that's entirely true, potato. My stock gauge move of the middle slightly before the fans kick in.
My aftermarket gauge reads about 225-230 before the fans kick on. So, either it reads high, or the fans kick on late. In either case at that point the stock gauge has moved up from the middle.

Now, seeing the needle up as high as the original poster is definately not a good thing either way. I would guess that in my case the temp would be well into the 240+ range when the stock gauge hits that mark.

Check to make sure your fans(both) are working, I think it's GND and FAN(or TFA?) in the diagnostics box you need to bridge. Alternatively, you could also just turn the AC on to make sure they run at least. As for testing wether the ECU turns them on at the appropriate temp, I guess you'd have to just idle the car until it gets hot enough, but I wouldn't want to do that until you get the other temp gauge on there.

And before anyone says it, my stock gauge is entirely unmodified, I'm the original owner of the car, a '94. Maybe they changed the middle range on 94+ models to be more sensible...?
I've also read the same threads where people reported seeing well over 230 on their temp gauges without the stock one moving though.

Anyhow, I got an FC thermoswitch waiting to be installed, that should kick the fans on before the stock gauge moves

My 94's gauge doesn't move up noticeably until 112-113*C (234-235*F) on my PowerFC. My Autometer water temp gauge at the T-Stat outlet agrees with the PowerFC +/- 5*F degrees.

Sorry to thread jack but I have a digital autometer aftermarket gauge and start to worry when it reads 240 degrees, but I notice that my stock gauge's needle is exactly in the middle and never seen it go above that. Either way one of my gauges isn't reading properly. I hope its the autometer.

You said that you changed the T-stat. Are you sure that you burped all of the air out of the system? You could be low on coolant that woul'nt nescesarily show up at the fill point.

I doubt it. The stock temp gauges suck ***. Good luck.

Hi guys,
Thas for the replys. Ibumaur, Yes both of my fans go on at the same time. So I don't think its the ECU, but I can be wrong. I'll have to see if both fans are working at all 3 speeds. Guess I'll have to bring my FD to the dealer to verify the dianostics of the car.
I want to know what is the diffrence between the Water Thermosensor and Water Thermoswitch. Or is this just the same thing(I'm looking at the FD workshop manual)

Thanks

Do the fan mod. You will then be able to control the fans at will. Turn the fans on when sitting and idling for prolonged periods or in heavy traffic situations especially on hot days. With the fan mod the system will spin the fans at medium speed. With the air conditioner on, they will spin at high speed. If you turn the fans on or they have been running for a few minutes prior to shutdown, the fans will run for another 10 minutes after shutdown and continue to bring temps down.
It seems that you may have air pockets in your cooling system. Burp the system. It required several cycles of bringing car to operating temp and cool down for me to get all the bubbles out of my cooling system. Be sure to use distilled water.

OK all
I went crusing for about 70 miles today and notice that I was running at normal temps. While driving on the highway I got off to return back home, as I merged back on, I decided to pus the car hard since I didn't see any problems ... In less than 10 second my temp started to go up, as soon as I was crusing at 70 MPH/120KmpH the temp dropped back to normal pretty quickly. Same thing happened when I got back to the city.

Hi Chuck
This afternoon I made sure that I didn't have any airpockets as much as possible. O only added 1/2 of a cup at most. and yes ... only distilled water is mixed with the coolent.
At this point I may just spend what ever it takes to have my car running. I think I will take your advice with adding a switch to the inside of my dash, along with changing the Thermoswitch and upgrading the RAD.
I hope that this doesn't cost me more than 1500$ between labor and parts

Thank you to all you Rotary Heads...
