Too much oil *can* cause trouble, as I found out not too long ago.
I overfilled my FD after an oil change, and this exacerbated a problem that was already there, but showed up with the excess oil. The rubber coupling on the stock y-pipe was old and oil was blowing out of it (at idle even!) and burning on the pipe. I talked to my mechanic (Ivan, for anyone that cares) and he indicated that overfilling can cause troubles beyond even what I saw (for the life of me I can't remember the explanation he gave me ) For what it's worth, he did mention that the FD should take no more than 4 quarts of oil after an oil change (might take more if the engine was totally dry), so if you're putting in more than that, stop!
I tend to put in 3 quarts of oil while the car is on stands, lower it, give it a minute or two to settle things, and then check the dipstick twice (just to be sure). Then I fill the car up about a quarter of a quart at a time to make sure I'm just kissing the top of the XXX marks on the dipstick.
As far as tranny oil, I dunno, sorry

I drain and filled with 4 quarts ran. Checked the stick was little low. Ran it for a few days and the same. I put in another 1/2 quart and its fine at full. So all in all I used 4 and a half quarts.

Um you fill it up and let the oil go into the grooves of the filter. Then pour what you can back out of it, there should be some left in. Put it back in!! Masta Cow is right, the suprise on my face when that little thing took 3/4 quart to fill!

Well,
as for an oil change I do mine every 1000 miles I no it is a waste but oh well she gets only the best of care and I will put just a little oil on the filter and move it around on the black rubber ring and threads and screw it on dont fill it up that will just make a dam mess nothing worse than oil all over the place. when you go to start her up just hold the pedal all the way to the floor and crank it and wait for the oil pressure gauge to move up and then stop and do a regular start that gets the oil well circulated threw the motor (as if you were cranking it to life the first time) I use 4 1/2 quarts with a MX-6 filter (from mazda) though
p.s. since I have been using the MX-6 filter it has maintained a higher oil pressure not much more but a little bit more(if anyone cares)
and if you have not started your car in a week or more I usally do the same thing. just too be on the safe side plus my car use to smoke real bad if it sat for a week or more now if a do a dry start the blue smoke is vary minimal
