A/C removal how to??

Hey guys I am looking for a "how to" on the A/C removal. I never really use my ac and right now it is discharged and I am about to install a FMIC. So I figure I might as well just take it out. I DID do a search and looked through the archive but I didn't see anything. Any help would be nice. Thanks...

put your car on jacks
remove the throttle elbow
remove the skid plate from the front bumper
then unbolt the cylander looking thing next to the intercooler and start running (dont inhail that **** unless you want to have frozen lungs and chock to death)
then under your car remove the condenser
remove all the lines accordingly
then remove the two bolts holding the AC dryer on the bottom, 12mm short wrench you need
then remove the two bolts at the top
remove the rest of the lines and bing bam boom

you may want to remove the compressor too, just find a short belt to run the p/s pump

I have been wondering if it is possible to remove the evaporator also, anyone done this???

by the dryer, i ment the compressor. to remove the evap, you have to rip appart the dash. under the airbag on the passanger side is the thingy. follow the hose from the firewall to the evap and start removing stuff. whatever you do, do not touch any wires that have yellow tape on them... unless you want to get punched in the face with an airbag yo

Ok, just making sure it was as simple as I thought. A lot of things on this car are usually not as simple as they appear. Also, do you know what size belt it takes to tun the ps pump after the removal of the ac compressor?

I realize this may be a potentially stupid question, but what the hell, I'll throw it out anyways. When you remove the AC, can you still turn the fans on at any time with the AC button and fan dial?

My gut instinct would be yes, since that is an electrical component that is not removed. So am i right?

the fans will work. you will only have heat and when you put it to cold, it will be heat coming from the pipe you removed from under the ABS

Yes, turn cabin air fan on at least 1 position and press A/C button. Radiator fans will run but I'm not sure what speed.

remove batter

remove the battery if your going to do anything in the dash, just to be 100% sure the airbag wont go off in your face.

He said his system was discharged already.

Of course we all know releasing freon into the atmosphere is illegal. Especially if you still have an R12 system!

Yes, it sure is. It is a pretty nasty gas, esp. the R12 (hence why it is illegal). Unfortunately a few months ago I was installing the koyo radiator and had to manipulate those lines up front a bit and one of them aquired a pin hole and all the freon leaked out beyond my control... Not much I could really do, so I just left in alone, let it empty the system and came back later to patch the hole.

To answer another question of why to remove the a/c system, I am going to remove mine 1) b/c I don't ever use it and I don't want to refill it 2) it will save a little bit of wieght off of the front end 3) I am about to install a FMIC and to not have to manipulate my already fragile lines (necc. for FMIC install) I just want them pulled in stock for and available to put back in later if so desired.

I believe that you would need to take it to a shop to have it properly discharged. They hook up a machine or canister to it that is lower pressure (vac) and pull it out. **I think** I have never needed to drain a system before.

If you are just going to use the patented "unbolt and run" technique, I would do it in a well ventilated area and give it about 30miin- 1 hour. Mine took about 30 min to empty with a small pin hole in the line. ( I am NOT endorsing releasing R12 or R34 freon into the atmosphere as it is highly hazardous and also a known carcinogen.)

^ya i was thinking of just taking it to a shop, that'd probably be best if they don't charge a ******** to discharge it...
