Buying RX-7, Odometer is off, Help

Hello fellow rotorheads,

I am looking to buy an RX-7. The owner states that the guage cluster broke awhile ago and he had to have it replaced by a Mazda technician. The odometer reads around 6k miles while the actual mileage of the chassis is around 50k. He claims that he has documentation and a receipt of this replacement.

My questions is I thought when they fix it, Mazda sets up the odometer to what it is supposed to be? I recall reading this way back in the days but I am not sure.

Please you expert insight!

-Thanks!

Look at the owners documentation. That will tell you all you need to know to answer the question.

I am scared because since the odometer doesnt represent the actual mileage and I thought Mazda fixes the mileage on the odometer to what its supposed to be.

Mazda isn't going to do all that, they would just put a new one in. Check the receipt and it will tell you.

I can tell you personally because my odometer has just stopped displaying the mileage, Mazda will only install a new odometer and you are supposed to submit mileage so they can print a sticker to stick in the door jam. This is stupid personally and I can't believe that the mileage would not be stored in the computer. I've only got 40k original miles on mine so this is a very disheartning to me

You guys with odometer problems are you certain the odometer is in fact not working or is the bulb merely out? If it's only the bulb the display will look blank until in very bright sun; then you'll notice the faint ghosts of the numerals. If you can make out anything very faintly you merely need new bulbs.
