Buying new Series 8, unsure what’s going on with this headlight

Hey guys,

I’m trying to get a new Series 8, I’m newer to RX7’s but I’ve never seen this type of headlight before it has some type of design in it as opposed to being flat on the top. It is only on one of the headlights as well.

Could someone let me know what this is?

It is a NACA-style low-drag air intake duct. It may just be for looks and non-functional. An after-market modification, I believe.

Usually versions of that are seen on the right headlight. Often to replace (more cheaply) a lost OEM one. Could provide a bit more air directly to the intakes (if OEM air box has been switched out.)

Nice looking car. Which year and version is it? Vin start with a 5 or a 6?

It's a 1999 Type RB, still trying to negotiate the pricing on this. Haven't asked about the VIN yet, anything specific I should be looking out for?

Also with that, is it possible to replace just the top cap part of it? (so not the entire headlight assembly), because I'm not a big fan of it to be honest.

Sold on ebay here and there. Price is not right! Used ones are likely damaged. Mounting flanges have a design default. There is a whole thread on how to fix.

Good luck.

That one is one of the better versions, actually. I'd be concerned about rain getting into your headlight mechanisms, though.

Be very careful removing. You can loosen the four mounting screws and lift off.

Mark the mounting position before doing so. (or spend much time trying to realign when you put it back..)

Check my albums.

Yes. It’s a fairly straight forward removal and replacement. And OEM covers should be readily available. Not sure of cost in NZ though, and of course it would require a trip to a collision shop for painting.

Yep, aftermarket part, there are a number of variations. Some are cheapie Ebay some are from Japanese shops. The idea is to get more fresh air to the intake.

Mazda does still sell new headlight covers, they are an easy install (4 screws) and come in primer, will need a paint and body shop to spray it to match.

I still have my Amemiya cover...somewhere. Removed it years ago. They’re a throw-back to when everyone seemed be buying open intakes that sucked hot under hood air. They really didn’t do anything for that and most of us are smarter these days. But personally, I actually still kinda like the looks.

Maybe someone will trade with you. Worth a chance.

(Let me know when you get it.)

"99 Type RB" FTW!
