Question Buy a PFC to pass emissions?

So here are my choices:

1. Spend about $400 on testing and fixes from the emissions station. They can recommend anything and I have to buy it or listen to them for it to count towards that $400...which will then allow me a temporary pass for two years.

2. Put that money towards a PFC and hope that I can tune the car to run leaner and cleaner for a pass.

The only reason that I ask this, is that last time I took the test I failed but just barely. The guys who test the cars know how to suck every dime out of you before you pass. I passed the third time they tested the car. They replaced the oxygen sensor and pretended that it fixed the situation. I know for a fact that it didn't change a thing. Anyhow, my car is running very well but I can tell it's quite rich in first gear. It is a stock ECU and I have all emissions equipment on the car except for the pre-cat which is now a downpipe. I don't have any codes reading from the ECU so I'm not sure what I can fix or test. I'm thinking a PFC would not only be good for emissions but I'd like to upgrade so I can keep an eye on the car and diagnose things better - plus, who doesn't want a custom ECU?

Any suggestions?

There is absolutely no reason a properly running FD will not pass emissions very easily with a stock cat. Here are my numbers from a CA emissions test:

I'm not sure why you would get your test performed again at a place that has already screwed you over.

I would get new plugs, do an oil change, and try a different test station. And make sure the car is well warmed up before testing.

Wouldn't an untuned PFC cause you to fail even more? The map on that runs rich.
It's cheaper to find someone you can bribe lol.
But getting a PFC is probably along your upgrade path anyways...

The base map on the PFC is pretty rich, though you *can* get in there and lean out certain sections w/o upsetting idle in order to pass Emissions.

I passed mine last year by doing that, and using a Hi-flow exhaust...

I wrote down which values I changed, and what I changed them to, somewhere...

Found it: follow this link

I keep a PFS piggy back on hand incase a customer car will not pass .I can lean it out and make them pass . I have some other things do do as well but that is another story .

It would be interesting to see your failed and pass numbers. They would indicate possible problems.I agree with moconnor----you should have no problem passing if your air pump,ACV and factory cat are in place and functional.

Hmmm interesting information. Thanks a lot for all of the replies.

I haven't decided yet if I will get a PFC...all I know is that it is in the upgrade path anyway (that's why I mentioned it...not JUST for passing emissions, I just thought it might help).

Anyhow, I recently changed the spark plugs and wires and will be doing an oil change. It still runs rich in first and second gear. Boost is normal and everything else seems fine so I'm not sure what it could be...I would think it would be good to get a proper tune?

I have all of the test numbers at home and will post them later on. All I know is that emissions in Ontario, Canada for an rx-7 are pretty strict so I'm not talking about a "dirty" car here...this car runs pretty clean to my standards.

start checking the emissions system, likley the 02 sensor is bad, or theres a crossed vacuum line somewhere
