Breaking up in third gear at 6500 RPM

After a great weekend at VIR, my 7 is breaking up at 6500 RPM's in 3rd gear. It runs fine in first and second through the entire RPM ranges. I did not try 4th or 5th. The vaccum is 17 psi, there is no water in the oil, and no oil in the water. The exhaust look clean. It runs at 182 degrees on my AutoMeter termpature gauge, and 85 on the Commander. Is there anything particitular about third gear at high RPM's, that would cause this issue? I will try changing the plugs once it cools down.

My mods are non-seq, efini twins, HKS blowoff Valuve, 3" downpipe/midpipe, with Racing beat exhaust (no cat, every thing is straight through), and Blitz SMIC. It's a J-Spec engine with about 8,000 miles on it.

Another issue - my transmissions gets really hot to the point, that if you pull down the gear shift boot, you can't hold onto the crome shifter, I am sure that Chuck Norris could but I can't. I have the B&M Short Shifter, and I use Royal Purple 90W oil.

Thanks for your help

I would change the plugs and plug wires. I prefer Magnacor wires (10mm), but a lot people complain about them as they are a little more difficult to clip on the plugs.

As for the transmission, that's pretty typical of a 3rd gen at the track. Do you have the insulation material around the shifter?

How fresh is that tranny oil? I had a similar issue once. I changed the oil to Redline MTL or MT90 and it helped decrease the temps quite a bit. I also wound up ditching that metal shift ****. Metal transmits heat. The stock one will stay much cooler to the touch.

Also make sure you have the insulation material around the shifter as Mahjik mentioned.

I'm having exact same issue breaking up high end on 3rd gear. The car stutters as if its hitting fuel cut yet my car is only running 10 psi. I'll try changing the plugs and wire and see how that goes.

Thanks guys. I will change the plugs and wires. As far as the insulation, I removed it when I put in the B&M shifter. I will put it back. Again thanks, for your response.

Hi Guys. It took me awhile but I took your advice. I changed the plugs, and plug wires, as well as, the fuel filter (what a PIA). Car now runs and pulls all the way through 3rd gear. I'll sleep better tonight. Thanks for the tips. P.S. I know it would have been helpful to make one change at a time and then take a test run, to isolate the exact problem, but I did not have the time. Thanks again
