Is A BOV necessary
Is A BOV necessary
Hi,

Perhaps you meant a pop off valve as opposed to a blow off valve? A pop off valve is a safety device that vents boost pressure to protect the motor from over boosting. It only functions when boost rises past its preset limit.
I had bnr stage 2s with the apexi bov at 16-17 lbs...it leaked...I switched the stock one back in...it was fine. I also have a turbo mustang friend that runs with no blow off valve. Between shifts his turbo makes a rediculous sneezing noise. I guess thats compressor surge.

I think you guys are going by just what you've heard on this forum. I don't think its good for the turbo or anything but also don't think its quite as bad as most of the people on this forum claim it is. Case in point, his car has done 10k with the turbo. He has not taken it easy on the car in any stertch of the imagination and the turbo is still in prestine condition...not one hint of play..not one hint of smoke. The turbo kit he used was a Turbo driven concepts stage 2 kit. It included everything from injectors, pump, battery relocation stuff, intercooler, all through the turbo kit. They inlcuded everything the car needed to install the kit....but no blow off valve. The shop that installed the kit was jade performance. They specialize in turbo charging mustangs and have done many installs. They have a shop mustang that dynos over 800 hp. None of their cars use blow off valves...including their personal cars. The owner has a turbocharged escalade...again, no BOV. His car has done 10k with the turbo not showing one hint of damage...I would actually expect some play on a single turbo 7 with a blow off valve after 10k...so I really don't think they are as important as this forum claims they are. I actually asked the shop owner about the BOV because since this fourm taught me that one needs to be there I was wondering why he didn't install one. He claimed that with a well built turbo there is no need for one. I also don't believe that every car that comes with a turbocharger stock, also comes with a bov. If they were as important as this forum says they are, wouldn't every car manufacturer 100% include one?
I have been employed in our local energy industry as a process operator for the last 13 years of my life , I started as a trainee I am now a junior production supervisor . I have worked with many centrifugal machines 100+ times larger than our turbos producing up to 2500 psi and 500te/hr of flow !!! , ALL of them have blow off , kick back or recycle valves (various names for the same thing) . Yes a turbo may run 10K without one but it may do 150K with it !! . The principles remain the same , only the sizes and aplications change , surge will severely damage any centrifugal machine , the minimum FORWARD flow through the compressor MUST be maintained or there would be a VIOLENT cyclic reversal of flow through the compressor , from its discharge to its suction and back many times per second . This reversal places damaging stresses on the thrust bearings , it also tries to cause the rotating assemply to spin in the opposite direction !!. Many a turbine wheel has been lost because of this .
The BOV preventis this by allowing , the forward flow of the air when the throttle body closes. Mr Bell knows his stuff , but he doesn't know it all .
