bought a jdm 13b tt cosmos what do i have?
Hey there i bought a complete j spec motor off ebay today. It came with the following - complete motor with tranny, altenator, starter, exhaust and intake manifold, turbos, ecu, , a complete harness uncut! My car runs fine but i would like some input on the advantages of this motor in my cym .Is it better hp?what changes am i dealing with if any? Give me some feedback. thanks Greg

The exhaust will be a bit different, jap-spec cars have the steering column on the turbo side, so their downpipes have a funky bend in them. It'll be more restrictive than any aftermarket dp you buy here.
I guess if you have most of the big electrical stuff you can use the harness, but it'd be easier I'd think to use the US one. The connectors for things like the dash might be different.
I'd say use the stock US ECU, because I'm not sure what gas the jdm one is tuned for. Or just get an aftermarket one from the start.
I'm pretty sure the tranny's are identical, not positive though. You can sell that off if you already have one. Or keep it as a spare.
does it say 13bre on the intake manifold? if so. . . no it will not bolt right up. . . i know of only one person that has put one into a 3rd gen. youll have to take it apart and use a lot of your 3rd gen motor parts to make it worth while. go ahead and rebuild it if you do that. . . well, youd have to if you cracked it open. haha. i cant remember who did it, but hes got a lengthy thread on how he did it. . . pretty cool, if you ask me.

Yeah, the 13b-tt cosmo motors aren't that great. They have a larger intake holes (nothin' a street port can't fix) and smaller exhaust sleeves. This reduces turbo spooling time. Also, it will not bolt right up. Trust me, I've tried it. But, if u really want to put that motor in, go right ahead. Personally, I would have gotten a 20B and done some fabrication with that. I don't like fabricating to put a more worse motor in a car. Well, I think it worse. But others might disagree with me. Try a search. There are tons of posts that have cosmo motor write ups.
Dammit I suck at reading. Didn't even see that it was a cosmo motor. Ignore most of what I said then, because I know next to nothing about how those differ from our engines. I thought had an engine from a j-spec FD.

iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii wouldnt say its a BAAAAAAAD motor at all. . . you can get it from japan cheaper than an fd motor and then take yours apart and swap all the things that make the fd great. i remember the exhaust sleeves and the stationary gears being the main thing. with that. . . simply install your stat. gears in the 13re and pull the exhaust sleeves out of the fd motor and put em in the cosmo motor. all in all. . . its a REALLY good idea to rebuild it. . . you get a decent motor WITH a streetport for less. . . AND you get to keep your core!!!
or just get a reman and port it when you get it.

This motor should go in with the use of the original 13b parts {im speculating}. Mike baker from this forum will be the lucky contestant for donating his 93 touring with a toasted motor . So its gonna go down at Autosports, And Mike Baker will be spearheading this project.hopefully mike will be up for some photos. Anyways any imput on this swap out that is without a doubt a fact referring to the engine swap would be greatly appreciated .
The cosmo's, although they are a 13b equipt with the sequiential twin turbos, they are a different motor. It has different tuning to better suit the cars luxury charactaristics. The maximum power is 230 hp (170kW). Peak torque values were the same for the cosmo and RX-7 engines, however, the cosmo engine has a flatter curve with emphisis in the mid speed range (217lb/ft @ 3500 RPM) Better suited for the automatic transmission. I'd suspect that with the RX-7 ECU it should be very similar.
