Bose Radio Problem
Bose Radio Problem
I did a small search and notice somethign about a code.
Let me give you the diagnostics.
I get static sometimes but I only hear the bass from the subwoofers.
The radio says Err which I guess means Error. Do I only have to put in the code will this fix it? Thanks

i have the same issue with the stock cd player. it tries to read it but it spits it out. tried using a brand new cd, a cd drive cleaner, cd-r, and nothing. the cd drive cleaner does not stay in long enough to clean.

and you can use the bose speakers with an aftermarket headunit,
i got the wiring harness at best buy, however the problem is that the harness dosent pass through a power for the bose amplifiers, so you have to locate which wire in the stock harness isnt being used with the new harness and jump that wire to a switched power on the headunit (remote lead)
it will work perfectly after that.

carstereohelp.com is a really decent honest shop. Once my stereo didn't sound right. it lacked bass and the sound levels were uneven left to right. I sent the 2 front and 2 rear amps in to be refurbished. Bob at carstereohelp.com called me back and said he couldn't find anything wrong with the amps. he even refurb'd one to see if it made a difference...it didn't. He only charged me for shipping back. He told me to send in the head unit as the problem must have been there. Somehow when I hooked it all back up it sounded okay again. There was a rattle from one of the bass tubes. Turned out the dust screen was loose and was rattling and popping so that it sounded like a distorting amp or blown speaker. I took it off and replaced it with a piece of panty hose. Works great. Now if I could only hear it over the single turbo, and straight through exhaust!

Oh and where is the center bose amp located? Center console maybe?
Bose typically fails in two ways:
1) the amps in the speakers blow out, caused by failure of a capacitor. Bose used Nichicon caps, which are junk. Sometimes the failure just causes bad sound or something less dramatic. There are maybe 12 caps per speaker amp, and you can buy Panasonic brand replacements for around $2.00 per amp total. You just need to know how to solder and replace them all. I've done this myself on my Nissan Maxima's Bose system, and all four amps required under $15 in parts. It took me about an hour per amp to do; an interested little project actually.
Edit: I saw the details of the RX-7 Bose system on the link - it appears in the 7 the amp is not on the speakers, so repair may prove to be even less labor intensive.
2) the headunit has a similar failure. I know people have fixed it, again for dirt cheap. The cost (www.carstereohelp.com's prices basically are just shipping and labor) is nearly nothing if you do it yourself. The error codes you see indicate a problem with the headunit - I don't think it will detect a speaker problem. I haven't attempted fixing one, but I do know of some links on the Internet which describe the procedure.
You can install an adapter to use Bose speakers/amps with a normal headunit. One is made by Scosche and runs around $50. I use one in my Maxima and it works just fine.

Well thanks for the replies. Turns out previous owner (I've had the car less than a month) removed all the Bose and installed custom speakers with a 300w alpine amp
. Frustrating to find out the amp was under the plastic in the back seat, yet rewarding at the same time. Thanks for the help.
