boost malfunction (ie. I need help)

Ok...I have tried the usual avenues of searching the archives for previous talked about boost problems and have taken my car to 2 different rx-7 capable mechanics and still haven't got the damn rocket ship fixed.

So here it is ye rx-7 prodigies...

Lets say it is a hot day and I am driving shifting through the gears as I would to beat a Mustang GT(can't stand the attitude that comes with those things) and first gear is working beautifully and then I drop it into second...low and behold...no boost and on top of that it makes a wierd noise that sounds like the turbo was pint up and didn't make the power transfer to the engine. It does this with every gear from hear on out but if I don't race through the gears I can get maximum boost almost every time. Even when I ride first out and then punch it into second I get power throughout the whole gear and it dies in third and fourth and so on. But there is a paradox to it. When my car is fresh and cold in the morning it drives like a wild bandicot with the boost kicking in everytime. Untill it heats up or whenever she decides to tease me with the damn boost problem.

One opinion that I've got is the solenoids are blocked but I had the two that involve the turbo replaced. Do I need to replace them all? Another opionion wich I haven't looked at is the wastgate might be fouling up. The next diagnosis is that it is my mass air flow senser.

I recently had it taken to a racing mechanic and he fixed a intercooler cup link and the accuenater valve(not sure how to spell it or say it right) something or other. It fixed all my old problems but I have always had this sticky boost issue the whole time so I am almost completely happy with my suger muffin on crystal meth.

Comrads...any advice will do...even the rhetorical ones will suffice...

I will print out the whole thread and give it to my mechanic so don't hold back with the language that I am just beginning to learn...

thanks in advance

well, the two variables i'm seeing here is boost when the motor is cold vs. hot, and then how you go through the gears. I assume if you shift slow and ease on to the gas, you can get full boost in 2nd gears and on?

This very puzzling since it involves temperature and gear selection. I'm thinking ecu for some reason. Thats the one unit that combines the two? What ecu are you running now? and can you find another ecu to just plug in and test? Also MAP comes up in my head too.

just an out there suggestion...i hope it helps.

I have the power fc unit on order from rx7 store, and I was told that it will come in in two weeks. That is a good idea and I will run it by my mechanic to see if it is the ecu. I'll see if he has a ecu I could plug in.

Also, since I am reletively new to the jargon, what do you mean by MAP? Is that an abbreviation or an acronym for something?

thanks RX7Elmo

The map sensor is a small black box with an electrical connector and a vac line connected to it. It is located on the firewall on the drivers side. It says "BOOST SENSOR" on it. Make sure the vac line on the bottom of it is connected. Most of the time if this hose is disconnected the car will not idle at all.

I had the same problem, if I remember correctly it was in the operation of the Charge Control Actuator. I have since gone non-Sequential to elimanate all the control problems I was having. The most useful thing I can tell you is to learn how the system operates. Check out http://home.istar.ca/~dvandit/turbocharger.htm and http://www.wvinter.net/~flanham/wlanham/ . They are very helpful websites, I must have read them 50 times before I figured it all out.

Funny thing is that I have the opposite problem. Everytime I start the car in the morning or when fully cold, I get no boost at all, but when the car warms up I get full boost. Once in a long while while driving my boost just cuts after shifting gears but, then I let it drop to vaccum and then floor it and boost comes on again. Still don't know whats wrong.
