Boost Issue after Winter Storage

I fired up the RX-7 for the first time since late October today. No problem starting. Fresh oil, etc. Drove fine to the gas station. I put in some fresh gas and fuel injector cleaner. I waited until the car was fully warmed and attempted boosting. It will go to 5 or 6 psi fine. After that it falls flat on it's face. Bad gas? Do I need to wait until all the old fuel is out?

I would wait until all of the old fuel is out. I would also stay out of boost just to be safe.

I also got mine out yesterday for the first time in months, and a couple times I hit full boost, but at least once it topped at 6psi. So if it continues like this and I find the problem I'll let you know.

What do you mean, "falls on its face?" If it really bogs, not just won't boost more, I'd try replacing the fuel filter. It may have water or dirt in it from condensation (especially if the tank wasn't full while it was stored, allowing a lot of condensation), etc., during storage.

If there is a lot of water, you may have to partially drain the tank to get rid of it. However, I'd try the filter first.

Damn. This is the last time I store the car. I just changed the fuel filter. God that thing is always a PITA. I'll try that and see if it gets any better.

I doubt it's the filter if you just changed it.
If it's a boost issue, have you checked the standard things....couplers, connections etc.?

I got mine out yesterday for the first time since mid-January. It ran beautifully (crosses fingers and knocks on wood...). I do store mine in a semi-heated (kept at ~40F when I'm not working in there), dry, garage and run the engine until it warms up thoroughly every few weeks.

The coupler problem I've had and know what it sounds like. It's not like a chain being yanked on the axle.

If there was water in the gas, the filter can plug almost instantly due to the paper element swelling - believe me, I've had this experience on an old car I once owned.

Secondary Injector Problem?

I took my car out of storage and it hits limp mode at wide open throttle. I can make 5 psi before it kicks into limp mode. I am on a fresh tank of gas with a can of sea foam and I changed the fuel filter. I'm guessing the secondary injectors are clogged.

1. I understand they kick on at wide open throttle, but do they kick on at <5 psi?

2. Can I remove them and soak them in cleaner to clear them, or is there anything else I can do?

3. Should I just order some new ones and swap them out? I'm wanting my car to be ready for Auto X season and it's almost here.

4. Any other ideas as to what is wrong? This is my best educated guess.

Sure it's not double throttle problem? Secondaries kick in when the duty cycle exceeds a certain percentage on the primaries.

I doubt clogged secondaries would be the problem....

Oh and MERGING threads with your other one.....

Does anyone know exactly when the secondaries open? I thought they only opened when the ECU switches the car to fuel maps for WOT. I could be wrong. I'll take a look at the throttle side of the equation. I'll cap off the opening leading to it to disable the double throttle and see if that helps. I swear I am never storing this car for more than a couple months again.

No, the secondaries come on when the primaries hit 50% injector duty or somewhere around there (it's in the FSM, too tired to look it up right now). WOT is not required but it helps.

The secondaries come on when you're above 2750 RPM and the ECU calculates that you need more than "a pre-programmed amount of fuel". The ECU calculates your fuel amount based on RPM, MAP, IAT, and atmospheric pressure. (Page F-94)

I capped off the double throttle. I burned off half a tank of the fresh gas then topped it off with more fresh gas and another can of sea foam. The problem persists. Any other ideas or should I call up Ray to order some new secondaries?

ECU reset worth a shot? I'll see if I can get my radio code before I do this.

I scanned for codes and got the fuel pump relay. Afterwards I reset the ECU. The problem is gone. I'm going to pull the fuel pump relay and check it anyway. I still don't understand how this happened. I guess she was mad at me for not driving her for so long.

Do you need a special device to check ECU codes?

Nah, he's messing with ya. Paper clips are ghetto. I use an honest to god piece of wire. About 3 inches long....ground to ten.
