what kind of hose to i use for boost line? i need to test a car's boost patterns so im just borrowing a boost guage for now, all i need to buy is the lines. can you tell me what line i need, if there is a certain type and size. and where can i get it? oreillys?

You will need some 1/8" nylon tubing & brass compression fitting & 1/8-1/4 npf adapter for the Guage end - at the Intake nipple you will need a short lenght of 1/8"id Rubber or Silicon Vac hose to couple the Nylon tube to the nipple - The Nylon tube & Brass Fittings are usually available as a Pressure Guage Instalation Kit, Most any Auto Parts store (NAPA, Kragen, Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Etc) should stock one.

 

I tihnk it amy depend on what brand gauge u have to. My autometer hooked up just like how maxpesce stated, but I had an RE boost gauge, and that jsut had a nipple on the back of the gauge that u run some vac line from the manifold to.

 

Do anything that will work, since you only care about boost, you don't have to worry about the tube collapsing under vacume so I would suggest that you goto your local hardware store, get some zip-ties, and some vacume hose. Take the gauge and the hose you want to splice into with you and get some fuel line or vacume line (high temp!!) that you can just get over the input line to the gauge then goto the plumbing dept, get a T-Connector (brass fitting with ribs, usually in the sprinkler dept) that fits the same vacume lines (you might want to also get a straight connector for when you get rid of the gauge, or a nipple cap for the T-Connector). Don't forget a razorblade to cut the vacume hose with. You need a very straight cut to keep the line from splitting under boost.

Probably the best place to splice in is the boost sensor but be very careful! A vacume leak here is not too cool for your car. If you want a really safe place, splice into the vacume hose between the check valve and the upper intake on the hose that goes between the oil filler spout and the upper intake. Don't use any grease (boost will pop the line off).

If you a get bad seal on the one between the intake and the oil filler spout, you idle will be about 1,500 rpm too high (use some carb cleaner sprayed around the problem spot if you have issues, listen for idle surge). Then just run the line into the passenger compartment through the firewall, usually through the soft crap around the steering wheel.

If you are checking the boost on an FD you do not have to splice any line. There is a capped off nipple on the manifold that works excellent for a boost guage!

 

RatedR- I'm installing a Defi D in my 93 using the "speaker pod". Would you reccomend the available nipple as a permanent or would you splice in as noted above?

 

No offense Shred, but that is terrible advice. FDs come with an unused nipple on the intake manifold that provides vacuum and boost readings. Just run an 1/8" or 5/32" ID vacuum line to it. You're done.

 

I would use this nipple anytime you install a boost guage.

 

Oh no, not more really bad advice........Splice a line into the boost sensor? Or between the check valve and the upper intake hose? Don't use grease? (at least you got that right........)
