Blocking BOV hose
Alot of my mates do this to their BOVs (stock and aftermarket), they bend the hose coming off the bov and zip tie it. If you do this like I have now with my stock bov, there will be fluttering coming out of your air filters and sounds like an external but not really! They do this really for the sound!
The bov still works but at higher rpms but at lower rpms the flutter occurs. I know that this may cause lag and may damage the turbos but the lag is very very minimal I can't even notice it.
My mates 97 S14 seems to make a very loud flutter after this mod, a very big difference then stock.
Flame away!

If you're getting compressor surge, do you get a humming noise after you let off the gas? Kinda like the sound of someone blowing their nose? Yeah I know it sounds stupid but I hear this and I tested my bov AND crv and they check out.
