Blew My Engine (Not the First Time and Sure as Hell not the Last)

I think I have to be the happiest person here when my motor blows. Once due to natural causes, another due to a boost spike, secondary injector issues, this time cause I’m an idiot and was pushing the limits. I really just like rebuilding them and I know each time I do I get better and better at doing it. I continue to find new things out by reading other people mistakes or making some of my own. Granted one day after I feel that I do the perfect rebuild and am over all doing everything right, I will be a little more upset but that is nothing more then me whispering damn under my breath and pulling out my AAA card (Never leave how with out it). I picked this car for its elegance, beauty and uniqueness for having such a different engine. Any pain brought onto me or my bank account by this car is all by choice and if I didn’t have such an obsession with rotary engines this wouldn’t be this issue. Hopefully this outlook on things will continue as I grow up and the eagerness to lean brought on by my youthfulness will not die as I get older. Good luck to everyone with their running or none running engines and never forget why you chose this car.

~Luke

That's too bad Luke, just as the summer is upon us.

Good luck with the rebuild!

know whats better than a rebuil? It starts with a 4 and ends with a rotor.

No worries Kyle ,summer is just a incentive to have it done and with my 4 new friends on the way that makes me even more eger to get it back up and running

You odviously have money to burn if blowing an engine doesn't make you feel bad. What is your definition of "pushing the limits" of your particular set-up? Also what apex seals have you used in your past rebuilds? One last thing.... there is a thread in the rotary performance section about re-chromed rotor housings. They look awsome. You might want to expermiment with these and see how they work out.

After reading all that i could, help from the FSM and the a little bit from the rebuild video(got kinda boring so i did use it much) i just decided to take one apart one day. I always like a challenge and i didnt see why i couldnt work up to be a good engine builder

I've had the same job for about 5 years now and tons of little side jobs doing computer work that have payed very big and i felt that that has help me obtain the "little" extra things in life that i have.

What is your definition of "pushing the limits" of your particular set-up?
I had a blind map put on my car before tunning for a T66 and up to .9 bar. I wasnt able to get a full tune because of unstable fuel pressure due to lack of current going to the fuel pump, and a few other little things. I was suggested to keep it below .5 bar untill i could fix those problem and get it tuned for 1bar+. I fixed all the problems and kinda thought it would be ok for me to run ~.9bar but one night air was a little cold and my foot was a little heavy and thats that story. My mods are pretty much everthing engine wise done to it.

Also what apex seals have you used in your past rebuilds?
Mazda 2 piece seals in the last 2 and whatever PFS uses in the first one cause they did it that time. Last time i only cracked 1 apex seal, and 2 corner seals but it would run and start up but sounded like a Harley. I kinda liked the way i sounded so i knew that couldnt be a good thing. I really wanna try hurley's corner seals with the 3 little springs and maybe go with a 3mm seal this time for exta boost down the road. I've just heard so many things and no one says mazda seals are bad but everyother company has had a few bad thing happen again and again.

I will have to check those out, i'm willing to try out anything new if it is supposed to be more durable. But i do unstand that no matter how strong your engine is that tuning is what makes the difference.

I don't have money and I don't feel bad when I blow engine's up(6 last YEAR)...some of us have that thing called confidence in our mechanical abilities.

Please give us a report on what kind of damage these newer Mazda 2 piece seals did to the housings. I heard that they don't damage the housings when they let go. IMHO 3mm's are unneccessary just for higher boost. Check the below link to see how well the Mazda 2 piece seals hold up. It's the 4th to the last post by Rxeng.

Personally I'm going with the improved RA seals now that its manufacturing glitches have been worked out.

Yea but you odviously have some kind of means that enables you to rebuild the engines so quickly without worrying about funds to do so. Overall I guess it comes down to what you are willing to except while experimenting. Please don't take that the wrong way.

right now the only damage that i have come across with the blowing of these motors are long sratches along the combustion side of the plates. I assume thats where the side seals meets and it just got kicked in the nuts on the first blow and it damaged it that way. Right now damage it also seen on one of the rotor faces from whatever seals PFS uses. I havnt taken this one apart yet(can find my socket to take off the front bolt) but when i do i'll give an update to any new damage.
