Question Is Black Soot/Melting Inevitable when Modifying an FD?

Is there some way to avoid the soot/melting problem? It seems that even with a HF Cat that people are experiencing this problem. What level of modification is possible without this happening? I know this is a much talked about subject, but I didn't see any threads that specifically addressed what performance mods were possible without having this happen.

I am hoping to build a car with ~300RWHP. I have read a lot of threads and it seems that at that level of performance you are destined to soot/melt a bumper, unless you put a heatshield on, which I am not too fond of, but I suppose I will if I must.

Just want some input. Thanks.

Melted bumpers are caused by people buying large tipped exhausts that don't fit properly. Well made exhausts without 5" tips don't cause any damage.

Soot will build up on any car that is running without a cat.

ahhh I see, are there any type of exhausts to avoid in particular or just ALL canister types?

racing beat dual tip.

It does get black around the tips...I'm running a little rich.

it always comes back to the RB exhausts doesn't it. I am not too fond of the look of the single tip RB(I prefer single to dual), but Racing Beat seems to be the exhaust of choice.

I have the Racing beat single, and while I still managed to soot up the bumper, there is no melting.
The soot probably came from me running really rich after blowing my primary turbo too.

PFS catback on mine. I have a resonated MP and don't have soot on mine. I think the soot depends on how rich your running as well as any oil that might be slipping by the seals in the turbos.

A somewhat tuned car in good health shouldn't leave soot, IMO.

what is your opinion on the sound of the PFS. it looks a little more aggressive than the RB.

my tip is 5". 3.5" piping from the turbos back then to a custom canister leaves soot doesn't melt the bumber. did a lil bit when it kept shooting flames but not its all good.

Actually, that's ANY sized exhaust that isn't installed or fitted properly. I have a large tip (GReddy Power Extreme which is 5" IRC) and have yet to burn or melt my bumper in the many years it's been installed.

As for the soot, it's just something you'll have to clean when cleaning your car. It's not a big deal.

i have am running 300rwhp with an apex gt spec, dp, and mp and have not melted my bumper in several track events and years of street driving. the black trim got very slightly melted only because it was touching the tip. the white bumper does turn slightly brown but it comes off with goof-off. just keep it well waxed to make it easier to clean

Somehow I feel jspecracer's comments on old people are appropriate here:

Here is an AVI I made of mine using a cheap web cam/portable still/movie camera.
http://tom93r1.kicks-***.net:8080/vid/RB.AVI

Somebody asked about how PFS compares to RB for noise, one of the guys in the local club has PFS and it is noticablly louder. I would say 50% louder under just about all conditions. If the RB is too quiet then this one seems to be a good alternative.
