Black Smoke
Hey,
got a bit of a problem.I gave my car a hard run yesterday and after giving it a good rest turned it off. After I restarted da car it gave a lot and i mean alot of black smoke. When I started the car today morning the same thing happened. Do I need to worried.
The smoke is black. The smoke disappers after 15 seconds or so.

thats carbin buldup, you should drive it hard like that more often and then that should stop soon. if it dose this everytime you start the car for about a week i would say you have a problem. If i were you i would go out on the weekend and go for a couple hour drive at 70 - 90 mph on the highway and blow out all that carbin

Oh, unless he blew bits outta the cat or something..
The black smoke IS carbon, as LilFatCrazyWop said. The carbon is just burned organic material. Do you smoke? the ashes off the end of the cigarette are carbon. A similar thing is blowing out your exhaust. Black smoke usually signals a rich running condition, that's it. I wouldn't be worried at all. The only time to worry is if it doesn't stop (you may have emmisions equip. failure) or if the smoke is white, blue, or sweet smelling.

Uh, you don't necessarily need to drive it to blow out the carbon buildup. You can just rev it high (almost redline) a few times. I'm not sure if that's okay to do on the FD, but on a piston engine it's just fine. The point is to break loose any carbon deposits in the manifolds, heads (on a pistoner) and in crevices in the exhaust system. You can only do this by generating a ton of airflow through all those areas. RX7's by nature smoke under load and at startup. It's a the saftey equipment in the motor that does this. I just run my car hard once a week or so.
Really, nowadays, there should be enough detergents in the gas you use to scrub most everything that may get carbon build up in it.
