I feel like I've seen black trim rings (instead of chrome) on the stock gauge cluster in certain later year cars in Japan. Am I crazy, or can someone confirm? I know people do this with the US cars by polishing off the chrome, but I'm talking about this coming as OE with the JDM green lit black guages or maybe the white faced guages. I know Mazda did a similar thing with the chrome trim in the NA miatas (switching to black) in the later 90s.

Bonus points if you can tell me which years specifically, or even a part #.

 

My car is a late model S6 with a build date in November 95, and I have the black trim rings around my cluster. So it at least dates back to late model Version III's.

 

I think they went to it in '96 in general. You should be able to get those later trim rings from Japan too.

I thought 94+ had black trim rings? My 94 Type R has them.

 

Thanks, all. Did they go back to silver at some point, or for some editions? I think I've seen a mix of the 2000+ cars where some seemed to have the silver rings. Maybe the Spirit R and some other editions got silver?

 

the 96-98 catalog lists both, so yes

 

My JDM 94 has the black trim rings for the gauge cluster.

 

i have a series 6 JDM cluster that has black trim rings and orange lights as a spare in my parts collection. i like the chrome better.
