Best way to waterproof mount 99 wing?
I'm going to be removing the R1 wing on my NA spec rx7 and putting on the 99 spec wing, but i need to put some backing on the mounting area to keep water out of the interior of the mounts. I'm not sure what the best option is. Can anyone let me know what they did? Also I want to make sure the wing isn't adhered to the hatch because I do want to be able to remove the wing later.

It's been awhile but, I don't believe the 99 spec wing will completely cover all the holes that were drilled for the R1 OEM wing. You may have to drill some new holes for the mounting screws and clips, then fill in and paint any exposed holes that the new wing does not cover up. As far as the old holes covered by the new wing (and the new ones) I used Lucas 8600 sealant around each hole in addition to the ~1/16" thick peal-and-stick rubber gasket that Mazda provides. This sealant similar to the Lucas 8660 sealant used to attach the mirrors in this thread except that it skins over while remaining very soft and pliable. To quote the manufacturer it's useful anywhere a low modulus sealant is desired such as in OEM trailer and RV applications. Unfortunately, it looks like you can only buy it by the case now (see this link). Surebond SB-140 Butyl Rubber Sealant looks like a good substitute that you can still buy a single tube here. None of these sealants are adhesives, as you can see from the mirror thread even after 25 years you can still pry the glass off the mirror mount, so after removing the mounting screws and clips you should still be able to easily pry the 99 spec wing off and the sealant will cleanup with a little acetone.
Now as far as the peal and stick gasket you can make your own using this part number (1566N107) from McMaster-Carr. Hope all this helps answer your question.

I surf a lot and had an old Astrodeck pad that I cut up when I installed my FEED type 2 wing (which BTW mounts up to the stock hatch with no drilling). It worked great!
Peel n stick, 100% waterproof and will last for years. The stuff was designed to be in sea water so you know it wont disintegrate after a couple months. It'll be adhered, but easily removed with some car wax or even a little rubbing alcohol. I stuck mine to the wing mounts and not the hatch so no worries about residual glue anyway.
