Being told that new 13b REW's are available from Mazda.
An engine builder freind of mine has called me to tell me that new REW motors are availalable. 16 to be exact.
Are these still being built?!
He's offering it to me for $400 more then the rebuild that he's building for me.
He would open it up and do the oil mods and very light porting as he was doing on the other motor he was building.
He says that thes motors are all completely new lock-to-lock.
I need opinions

The "new" motors from Mazda would be crate motors that have been sitting in a warehouse for years and would probably need to be rebuilt themselves, although it would at least be a good point to start from and would only require a new seal kit. Whether or not they exist I don't know, there has been random talk of it here and there.

They probably haven't been "in a warehouse for years" - I think these are motors being brought over fresh from Japan. Remember, Japan had the FD up until 2002, so I'm sure they're still making some for Japanese use. The short blocks, BTW, are pretty much the same.
I have a feeling someone enterprising at Mazda brought another container of them over for us poor US folk .

I dunno, most of the time when a manufacturer is done with a production run of vehicles they make a stockpile of crate motors and just sit on them until someone needs to buy one. Unless that motor is still in use in another vehicle (which the rew isn't). Would be nice if they were freshly build motors! It's all speculation until someone pops forth with new info, so I hope you're right Dale!
Keeping in mind 2002 was still 6 (almost 7) years ago now ... they might not be DECADES old .

There was a thread about this a couple of months ago. According to info in that thread, Mazda Japan took over all rebuilds since the US side no longer had good core parts availability and the quality of work from the rebuilders wasn't the best. No available core parts = new parts in the motors. The current batch of motors should be all brand new parts and presents a pretty nice value.

I have had one installed now for a month. Rich(GoodfellaFD3S) told me back in the summertime(at the time when my coolant seals were failing)that Ray@Malloy was getting in a bunch of new ones for $3500. I called Ray and he told me that Mazda had run out of good cores and was trying to generate more interest in the reman program. He told me he bought every single one that was coming over and I had him put me down on the list. I don't recall how many he was actually getting but he did have a few people already reserved. He also told me these were BRAND SPANKING NEW units that were just built and were being ready to ship over on the boat. He got them in the end of August and Dave@KDR got one for me. Dave told me these are now assembled with an adhesive rather than a gasket at the oil pan. I snapped a few pix before installation and you can barely see it slightly bulged out(white) at the oil pan. Also something else about the flywheel and some other stuff which I don't remember. These also come with new T-stat, waterpump and OMP nozzles. I just did my 1st oil change at 400 miles this past weekend and the vacuum at idle is already pulling 18-19 inches.

I called ray last week and he had 6 more of these available... I chose to go with a reman since I could not shell out the extra $900.00 but if something happens with this engine, I will certainly go with the N.I.B option
