Banzai information...

1. Does anyone have pictures (good pictures!) of their car (or any car) with Pettit's Banzai rear wheel flares? The pictures on the Pettit site aren't great, and they don't show the fuel door treatment, since the flare almost *has* to interfere with the operation of the fuel door on the driver's side.

Not sure what I'm going to do, but I am sure that I'll need more than 285mm of meat under the back of the car. I've already switched to coil-overs and M2 Performance trailing arms. I don't want to put 4x4 fenders on the back of the car if I don't have to, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

2. Also, anyone have dyno results for a Banzai (or other 20B) conversion? Pettit is claiming 550 flywheel hp @ 7,500 rpm, and 460 ft. lbs. at 5,500 rpm. I just want something for comparison to my engine. Preliminary modeling is showing 77 more horsepower (622 vs. 550) and 95 more ft. lbs. (555 vs. 460) measured at the same rpm points. Overall, 89 more horsepower and 97 ft. lbs. more at my peak points, plus over 400 ft. lbs. from 2,000 to 8,000 rpm. Naturally aspirated on pump gas.

http://www.pettitracing.com/sections/Banzai.html

BTW, I think their horsepower graph is a little optimistic... they show power peaking at 600 hp @ 8,000 rpm. Why would they list peak power as 550 @ 7,500 rpm then (farther down the page)?

Ok on the flares (a man has to do what a man has to do) but if you go with the stripes I swear I'll hunt you down like a dog.:p

Jimlab - I believe Kevin Wyum ran 315s on the rear of his FD back in '97 or '98. Not sure what size rims he had (18x11 rims maybe.....). My understanding is very vague on how the suspension setup affects the rear wheel clearance, but I believe the key is in the coilover kit.......

Of course, you;ll need decent rubber up front to kinda balance the car. I have heard of folks running 275s up front, on 17X9 rims, with a decent coilover kit.

You may want to approach Pettit directly and check with their bodyshop, if you decide to go with flared fenders. I would suggest not installing a body-kit on the car - you could simply leave it stock-looking, except for the big meats.....

I assume that you're looking for more stick in the rear, when you launch off-the-line. You may want to consider running ultra sticky tires in a 285 or 295 size to get that grip - something like Kumho Victoracers or Yoko A032s, etc. Even with such tires, you'll probably need to practise easing off the line....

On the banzai, Cam modified the fuel door so its in a D shape. It still uses the fuel door release lever, but instead of swinging open, it just comes out. Fill up, but it back in its slots, and close it, works pretty good. I have a few pictures of it........below.......

You can also use a Mazdaspeed 15th anniversary kit with the fender flares to get clearance but have a "cleaner" look. Here's a pic of it:

i personally think the Mazdaspeed 15 Anniversary looks like ****.

the pettit flares look awsome...only if they were molded in with the rest of the body work for the real clean look. .

hey Jim, since you have a money tree in your back yard, how about an R-Magic wide body kit? only $15 grand.

I don't think the Mazdaspeed kit has anywhere near the width that Jim is looking for. There's always the possibility of doing some custom work, Jim. Use the stock rear fenders and some sculpted styrofoam as molds an come up with some fiberglass (or CF) fenders. The Banzai fenders look cool, but I would definitely try to cover up those rivets if possible.

I do agree about the 285s not being enough. I thought Area 51s suspension setup was to provide more room in there for bigger wheels/tires, but I guess that's wrong.

what kind of rubber are you planning on using anyways? I was going to assume a BFG Comp T/A Drag Radial for the rear,
