Unhappy Bang!

Hi,

PLEASE HELP ME SOMEBODY

My 3rd Gen RX7 went bang the other day (literally). it managed to get me home (5mins away) but was missing very badly. I live in the channel islands and there are no rotary specialists over here! d'oh.

Im basically after any information as to what this could be. does it sound like a rebuild job or possibly turbo? any tests i could run to check?

any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks!!

do a compression test before even putting effort into anything else.

I'd do my best to help if maybe I read a symptom... "engine goes bang, whats wrong?" isn't a very good way to describe a problem.

btw I love your avatars, different every week I see you lol

Check the MAP sensor.

Where you boosting? Did you pop off an intercooler coupler?

maddslow - ok, i'll be a pro at this ish before long!

anyways, a more detailed description -

was driving along, went "bang" and started runnig like a normal car would on 2 cylinders. got it home and died in the driveway. a red light came on, which i think is exhaust temp, maybe temp in general. it still starts though (missing). erm smokes a bit. not sure what else to say

Yeah, do what 7racer said, check the vac line to the map sensor. If it's popped off, the engine will run real crappy, rough, lots of smoke. It's an easy check.

It's a square black box attached to the firewall above and to the left of the brake booster.

Open the hood of your car. The firewall is the far wall of the engine bay, closest to the interior of the car. Look just beyond the intake elbow that connects to the upper intake manifold. Just to the right of the elbow, attached to the firewall will be a small black box that's supposed to have a vac line running to the bottom of it.

Here's a pic of where it is:

And read the FAQ at the top of this forum. There's a lot of good info there including explanations of the various acrynoms used in this area of the forum.
