Because the cars most likely don't have a catalytic converter to burn off the excess (hence why you don't hear normal production cars backfiring).

It can damage the muffler or pipes, after all it is an explosion. I have seen it blow the exhaust clean off a vehical; then you are back jacking with it in the shop.

where is the air intake thermosensor? and how can i check it? i have backfiring for a few minutes after startup (usually a few pops on decel). stock car except for DP, metalic substrate HF cat, and exhaust. (i dont want the backfires to ruin the delecate cat... it was expensive). thanks, heath

The IAT is located under the UIM. Backfires are not harmful on this car. It's normal once you begin to modify the exhaust. If you have a programmable ECU, you can tune it pretty much out as there are deceleration fuel settings on most of those ECU's which is where most of the backfires will occur.
